About the only Sure Things in this Pennant Race are the Red Sox (just too much talent) and the Mets (they manage to find a way to win when they have to, and there's no other really strong team in the league). But when the playoffs start, all bets are off.

I'm wondering who will get the Awards this year. There are no clear candidates for anything - MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year...

Well, I see the Skankees getting the wild card -- barring a nearly historical fall, they'll not take the AL East over the BoSox.  However, from what I hear, Pay-Rod is all but set to get the MVP again.  Beyond that, need to scan all the stats and not just my regular loyalties.

Me, I'm just hoping the Phils get the wild card and Cole Hamels is good to go.  Then it'll be fun.  Otherwise?  Eh.

Well, let's see....(stats current as of today)

American League:

MVP: A-Rod (.312, 52 HR). He almost single handedly keeps the Yankees in contention.
Cy Young: C.C. Sabathia (17-7, 3.15 ERA). He'd have 20 wins if it weren't for some 1-0 losses.
Rookie of the Year: Brian Bannister (12-8, 3.46 ERA). Think where he'd be if he were playing for a real team and not the Royals.

National League:

MVP: Daivd Wright (.315, 27 HR). Making his case as the Mets run away from the rest of the NL East.
Cy Young: Jake Peavy (16-6, 2.43 ERA). The Ace of the Padres staff.
Rookie of the Year: Ryan Braun (.328, 30 HR). A key reason the Brewers are contenders.

I'm with you completely in the AL, as much as I hate to vote for Pay-Rod.

In the NL Brau has my Rookie ofthe Year nod, easy.

the rest I need to delve back and examine.  David Wright definitely doesn't move me. nor does a 16 game winner for Cy thus far.

Well, there's no real outstanding candidates in the NL. But it would be sort of cool if both MVPs were third basemen for New York teams...

Damn, if only the Phils could just play the Mets until we hit 162 games and not anyone else.  It would be our best shot at winning the division.

That's like a bunch of flamingos getting upset at each other.  

So Phils almost lost an ugly one thanks to their useless middle relief, but they won, and the Mets lost.  So right now the Met lead stands at 2.5 games.  Considering the Mets are playing the Nats and Marins for most of the rest of the year, it looks bleak, but I'll take what little hope I can get now and run with it.

Still too soon to assume anything but if the Cubs can win 7 of their remaining 11 games they'll make the post season.  That said, they still have some work to do tonight against the Reds.

Mets won -- inevitable.

But the Phils lost a toss-up game in the 10th 2-1.  Can't always win such games....But Adam Wainwright deserves the win -- he didn't get it, but he drove in the tying run and pitched 8 innings while giving up 1 run.  Jamie Moyer lobbed 6 innings of 45 year old 1-run slop out there to tie it and normally that would have done the deed.

2 more Phils' wins and Mets going 1-1 means it's at 1.5 back again.....I'm glad it's still interesting, but we did this the previous 2 years and came up empty (though had far fewer major injuries) so...damn.  We're due.  

Also glad the BoSox won and the Skankees lost so we won't hear all media frothing over the chance that the Skanks will win the AL East.

Eh, the Yankees will make it as a wildcard, play the Angels, lose and in the process Rodriguez will do his usual post-season meltdown.

Very few things are certain in life.  The above are a few of them.

P.S.  If the Mets closer doesn't get out of the trainer's room soon, the Phillys will win.  Even if the Mets do win, without that reliever they won't last long.
