My turn
« on: July 16, 2007, 09:54:30 PM »
Fate has pointed it's finger at me saying "You're next under the knife." Actually, in this case it's the scope. No, not that scope, Munch, the arthroscope. Somehow or other I tore the medial meniscus in my left knee back about five or six months ago, and I'm finally getting it fixed tomorrow. The upside is I'll be able to hang around here more for the next couple of weeks.

I remember my first run of knee surgeries.  I was 19 the first time (right knee), 21 for the second one (left knee) and 22 for the last one...so far(right knee again).  My advice is to get a nice place to relax with everything you need within arms reach.  You're not gonna want to move around much the first few days.

I've made up the futon on the first floor, and brought the toiletries I need and some clothes downstairs from the master. I've also restocked the kitchen from the basement pantry. I won't have to move off the first floor for a few days. Three hours and counting.

Everything went fine. The doc had to do some more scraping in there than he thought. The tear was bigger than expected, and uncle arthur had also made an appearance and had to be dealt with. Joy. Now I'm just sitting back with my leg up and an ice pack on my knee. The pain is only a dull ache, and I get around ok. I'm just being careful about over doing it.

To date I've only broken an arm, but my parents assure me that ya gotta watch out for the knees.  Thank you the report, and congratulations on the recuperation.

I can totally relate.  My first knee surgery was in late 1979 when authroscopic was still considered experimental.  They removed some miniscus as well as scraping the back of the kneecap and put me in a leg cast for a week.  Second one was 4 years later and I was put in a metal brace for 2 weeks.  Third one was 3 weeks before I got married in '88 and they put me in an elastic knee brace for a week.  Last time in 2004, they put me in support hose and I walked to the car!  For the record, I have 2 each knee and am now just waiting for the 20% miniscus I have left in the left knee to fail so I can go in for a miniscus replacement surgery!  WOO HOO!
