A treadmill is a staggeringly awful idea for someone with her physical qualities. Assuming you're truly in contact with her, pass on the advice to stick with an elliptical trainer which has both an incline and a tension adjustment. Set it to either as high or as low as it will go on the incline (both options do different, very good things - low incline hits the calves, high hits the butt) and to most importantly set the resistance so that she can essentially walk at a normal pace but still have it be a challenge. This will not only be more effective at burning fat than jogging but it will cause less movement and stress.
If she wants to pay for my travel expenses, I'll happily walk her through a solid week's worth of training geared toward her unique needs. Not holding my breath, of course.
I have to disagree...comming from a former competitive bodybuilder background, Cardio is about the worst Fat burning technique in the world. If this was the case, thoose of us who see the treadmills loaded with fat people, would see thin people instead.
A combination of moderate to heavy strength training, and proper diet, with a minor supplementation of cardio is KEY for fat burning in the long run. Just basic physiology of the body and how it works. I have prepped many national level athletes to sub 3% bodyfat levels for shows, and NOT one of their diets did we focus on cardio. this is a huge misconception, and a personal pet peeve when people give cardio as advice. This just leads to millions of people almost utterly wasting their time in the gym.
Let me give you a idea...30 min of cardio at moderate intensity for the average woman, will burn rougly 150-200 calories. If that same woman added 10lbs of muscle on her frame, and did no cardio a week, keep her diet the same (maitenence calories) she would burn roughly 1lb of fat per week. Every 1lb of muscle added to the body burns roughly 50 calories a day, just sitting there, doing nothing. Your 150 calories your burnt doing the cardio, well 1 banana and you ate EVERYTHING you burned off.
