Didn't want to create a new thread for this, but I saw Star Trek and was was quite sad to see no Diora Baird. I tried to look up why, but all I found were various stories on how she was in Star Trek. Apparently she was supposed to play the "Orion Slave Girl" but the only green woman in that movie was, as we already know, Rachel Nichols.

Anyone know the 411 on the tragic absence of Baird from Trek?

A few years late (and possibly commented upon elsewhere in the Forum, for all I know): she was in a cut scene where she's on the Enterprise and Kirk mistakes her for the character played by Rachel Nichols.  It's a brief "I guess 'we' all look alike to you" moment that didn't come across very well (and apparently he may have been **83** with Nichols' character to get access to the Maru simulation, a plot point that isn't evidenced anywhere else and thus may also have been cut) so...no Diora on the movie screen.  The cut scene is on YouTube (it's easy enough to search out), and while she's in the standard form-fitting uniform, there's not much skin showing so don't expect anything sexy there.

Weird that Chris Pine will be playing 2 series characters in movie series that will overlap.  Captain Kirk and Jack Ryan.  The only other actor I can think of doing that was Harrison Ford who played Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

However in saying that, Henry Cavill (the new superman) will be starring in the movie version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Having served aboard several "ships" like the Midway, Constellation and the Coral Sea I can understand why the Enterprise in this movie version is so different.

J.J. asked Industrial Light and Magic to give the Enterprise more of a "hot rod" look. He really did. And they delivered.

Star Trek 3 (13) to be released in 2016. Thankfully Damon Lindelof has nothing to do with the writing of it, since he ruined LOST and Star Trek: Into Darkness!

Justin Lin (Fast and Furious series) will direct. Simon Pegg (Scotty) is actually co-writing it. Shatner may appear and Bryan Cranston MAY perhaps be the villain.

Looking good so far. Won't be hard to beat the last one though. Would be nice to see a few touches to the past, seeing as it is the 50th anniversary.

I like Trek best when it presents morality plays: the whales (STIV), the Berlin Wall in space (STVI), and of course the many TV episodes. That is, when the stories are actually about something.

I'm not a big fan of shoot-em-ups or car chases in space. But I know the youngsters just love J.J.Trek.

Oh most definitely.  The best TV episode ever was the Deep Space 9 episode called Duet:

I was a die-hard TNG fan, but only saw the first 2 seasons of DS9 & ST:V before joining the Army in 1995.  Since I went 'cold turkey' of no T.V. for 5 years, I got sort-of caught up after I got out.  I finally sat down last summer (amidst an intestinal infection, so I didn't get out much), and watched DS9 & ST:V all the way thru.

My fav' ST episode of all time is from DS9, "In the Pale Moonlight", where Sisko has Garak fabricate evidence to convince the Romulans to join the war.  Sisko's dialogue to his personal log was some of the best writing in the whole Star Trek genre.

A little trivia.  Some may know that Garak was played by Andrew Robinson, whom was also the 'Scorpio' killer in the first "Dirty Harry."  Vreenak, the Romulan senator Sisko had to convince, was played by Stephen McHattie, the lead killer in "History of Violence."

My favourite Trek episode is probably 'Yesterday's Enterprise' but as of yet I have still not seen all of DS9 or Voyager. I have seen all of Star Trek: Enterprise and it actually wasn't bad. Too bad we didn't get the full 7 seasons. A pity too that we have not seen 'Admiral Archer' in the rebooted/sequel movie series, although he did get a small mention in the first one.

To each their own, but the original series episode, "The Corbomite Manuever," is, for me, the ultimate episode: alone on the edge known space, facing a complete unknown.

It was the first series episode filmed (thought not first aired), and therefore benefits from excellent lighting (somewhat darker than any other episode), careful camera set-ups and nuanced performances -- yes, especially from Shatner.
