Great sentiment!

I'm still with StrongBad, though: "Japanese cartoons are weird, man..."

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. (i.e. The Japanese would think StrongBad is pretty weird, too).

Seriously, ..I think I need to be reminded once and a while that people still have such a lack of understanding about Japanese animation. What is odd to me the most is that anime (as it is usually called) has American cartoons to thank for much of it's early inspiration. But it IS created for a Japanese audience with a culture that has been molded by many centuries without the influence of Europe (notably it's religion). Explaining why anime is "weird" would (and does) fill books.

Ironically, I think it was shara1 who once thought anime is all about giant robots (I'm glad she's discovered another genre in anime).

All I ask is people watch a variety of anime before drawing conclusions or making sweeping generalizations. Watching one anime and saying it's all weird is like watching one speech by George W. Bush and claiming all Americans are uneducated morons.
Thank you for your patience as I indulge my need to share.

Correction: On further thought, I was remembering a comment made by Notty, not shara1.

I'm a big fan of anime (and manga), but I could never understand the bias for subtitles over dubbing in the language you understand (for most of us, english). Your post above is a prime example of how bad "SUB"s can be.

Even if I can understand & appreciate the intended message.

it's because in MOST anime (Dragonball is an exception) the dubbing is so horribly bad with stereotypical voices, half of the jokes getting lost or becoming lame, no emotion whatsoever and the absence of BAKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Why I prefer subs over dubs... I prefer subs over dubs in any language btw. A lot of american cartoons get dubbed to dutch over here.... Imagine Johnny Bravo with a dude trying his lowest voice in another language

I'm American, and I think that StrongBad is pretty weird too

Just so you know, I enjoy hentai, manga and anime; I enjoy cartoons and animation, period. (I have the BEA to thank for introducing me to quite a number of manga/anime that I otherwise would never have even seen or heard of.) I'm fully aware that anime is made by people who have a totally different culture from mine and in fact I enjoy learning about those differences, the better to appreciate the culture from which it comes. I was merely quoting, in a facetious way, the American online cartoon character.

That said, because I enjoy the sound of the Japanese language (even though I understand not a jot), I prefer reading subtitles than hearing (badly dubbed OR well-dubbed) versions of the cartoon in question. Although when they get the voiceover right, it's amazing. I watched True Lies the other day, and, for a lark, I decided to watch it with the Spanish language audio track enabled. It was uncanny how much the guy who read Ah-nuld's lines sounded like him: he got his timbre and his cadence almost perfect, despite the fact that it was entirely in Spanish! That's getting it right.

some anime is pretty weird though (watch FLCL? Excel Saga? Puni Puni Poemi? Chromartie High?) but I think watching anything in a language other than its own is demeaning to the original product, no matter how well it is done.... (some are done really well, like the zookie pointed out).
