Former model Candye Kane diagnosed with cancer
« on: April 27, 2008, 09:29:26 PM »
Even though she's been out of the biz since 1987, I still Google "Candye Kane" occasionally just to see what's up with her and her singing career.  Imagine my surprise to read this:

Quote:

Oceanside blues singer Candye Kane has been diagnosed with a form of pancreatic cancer, and her many friends in the San Diego music community are banding together for a fundraising concert next month. Kane is scheduled to have surgery next week but has limited medical insurance, so efforts are under way to raise money to help her cover her medical bills.

On her Web site, Kane said she'd been suffering abdominal pains for four to six months before she went to the emergency room at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas on Feb. 22 and a CAT scan revealed a tumor in her pancreas.

After her diagnosis, Kane canceled her European concerts and her slot in the Blues Caravan Tour to focus on her health. On April 18, she'll undergo a procedure known as a pancreatic duodectomy at UC San Diego Thornton Hospital. On her Web site, the normally zaftig Kane said she's preparing for the surgery with a veggie-heavy, high-alkaline diet that she expects will help her shed as many as 70 pounds by the end of the month.

The "We Love Candye Kane Benefit" concert will be held at 7 p.m. May 5 at Humphrey's Backstage Lounge in San Diego.

God that's gotta be rough.  Terrible enough to have the health problem, and then the money issues on top of that.  It's not like independent musicians and singers have a great health plan and four weeks' paid sick leave.

The good news is, first of all, that according to Candye's own site, she has the same kind of cancer that Steve Jobs had, which is a more treatable kind than your standard pancreatic cancer.  The other good news is that she came through the surgery all right and is now resting at home.  Let us all wish her well in her recovery.
