I'm going to wax existential for one moment --

God, I miss the Nineties, and I never took advantage of them either.  So many big bust stars, and so much Dow boom.  Of course, some of that was the dot-com bubble, but you still had a sense that the world had it figured out.  And I loved Google from day one, I should have bought it.

I'm not saying we'll never see new great things -- but I don't think we'll get to luxuriate in a WAVE like that ever again.  This is looking to be a serious, scrappy century.  When Prince sang about partying like it was 1999, he wasn't kidding.  "By the year 2000 we'll be out of luck, out of time."  The world didn't end, but a chance at relaxing in it did.

All right, back to reality --

The big question is, have we seen the floor?  Last week settled at 8451, and my guess of 7227 was briefly legitimized by a quick intra-day dip below 8000.

If I miss any super-bargains these days, I won't feel too bad, but this IS the time to start thinking about buys.  I guess these days I'm wondering, what's out there which may someday (some decade) take the Dow to 22,222 ... ?

It'll get there. And just think what a share of good ole BRK.A will be worth...

I don't think the temporary ban on short selling has been lifted yet.

The ban on short sales applied only to 100 or so financial stocks.

Look--Everybody but Bush knows that Chris Cox is a lazy, ignorant, and incompetent ass. He was appointed SEC Director because he had never offended any of Bush's buddies. He has no clue what he's doing, so he just keeps rearranging the deck chairs. Short selling had nothing to do with the current economic crisis.

I agree, short selling was far from the cause. I'm in the camp with the thoughts that, for a few of the stocks of which it was banned, that actually made the declines worse as there was no short covering on any upturns.

They've already planned their Nov. meeting to do just that.

They've already had at least 1 emergency meeting about lowering production.  If people keep pushing the price down, there's nothing they can do about it.  Some traders are saying that it's going to go down to $50 and others are saying it's going to go down to it's usual $20-40 range.

1.5 Mil barrels/day reduction, and still the price goes down.

I say, let them try to keep oil prices high. Antipathy will surely spread across the world.
