Buffet says government is doing the right things

Generally, endorsements mean nothing. To me, this one means everything.
To paraphrase Poul Anderson, "Intelligence is a wonderful thing. It provides us with reasons for doing what we were going to do anyway."

Me, too. A few years ago I attended a lecture by Buffet. Mostly I remember his sex jokes.

By the way, I think Zookie was being ironic about the "opinion" quote, wasn't he?

Any multi-billionaire who is willing and eager to increase the nation's tax revenue by asking to be taxed even more, is all right in my book. Warren Buffett is my second-favorite billionaire, behind only Sir Richard Branson.

I wasn't; I know the usual quote about opinions that notty was thinking of though ("opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they usually are full of shit") but I decided to put my own spin on it

Comedian Paul Mooney started out as a Hillary Clinton supporter but I guess he had a change of heart. You talk about the greats of comedy, you have to mention him. Check out these two appearances on Letterman:

Paul Mooney on David Letterman, March 27, 2007

Paul Mooney on David Letterman, October 29, 2008

Hey Zookie, what do you think of the  FairTax plan? With Obama talking about simplifying tax code, I really wish he'd go this route.

Simplifying Tax Codes has always meant removing the tax breaks for common joes like you and I, and leaving in the loop holes for the rich shmucks.  I hope it's different this time.

Ultimately, it won't be

The FairTax plan would be a huge departure from the current scheme - in a nutshell, it effectively abolishes the IRS and eliminates income and property taxes. All taxation occurs through a 23% sales tax, so the more you spend, the more taxes you pay. A monthly "prebate" check is sent out which covers cost of basic necessities, to avoid undue burden on the impoverished.
The biggest problem I see with something like this that makes sense and eliminates so many loopholes is that those who best benefit from said loopholes are also most able to see that the system isn't changed out of their favor in the first place.

I hope you're wrong. I hope we're both wrong... I have hope!  Unfortunately, a flat consumption tax type of scheme is neither appetizing to Reps or Dems.

They're just a bunch of fracking fools, Chris, and the Reform party and the Perotistas didn't stand a chance.

The "prebate" thing seems like it would become outrageously complicated in and of itself.  Personally I'm concerned that lower income people would still end up taking on a higher tax burden than they are currently since this tax is wholly based on how much of your income you spend.  Lower income folks spend a large percentage of their income, because they have to.  If wealthy people make money off of investments and capital gains, and the majority of their money sits in a bank all year, they would be taxed proportionally (to their income) much much less than the poor person.  I just don't see how the "prebate" checks would make up for the disparity in tax collection without lowering the overall revenue.

How would they treat purchases from another country?  Tax people when they come back into the country?  Otherwise if I lived near Canada or Mexico I would make all my significant purchases there.
