This nondescript airfield is located in the island of Tinian, which is part of the Northern Marianas territory of the USA and located Northeast from the US territory of Guam in the Western Pacific. Back in World War 2 it was the busiest airfield in the world since from this island B-29 Superfortress bombers took off on their missions to bomb Japan in late 1944 until August of 1945. On August 6, 1945, The B-29 Enola Gay took off from the North Field runway on its mission to Hiroshima and on August9, 1945, The B-29 Boxcar took off in its mission to Nagasaki. I've been in Tinian and at the North Field there is a small monument, maybe 4 feet tall, which marks the field and states that on August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay took off from the runway and changed world history. Anyways, for years the airfields had been neglected since there didn't seem to any need for them especially after the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Today though, they are being modernized and refurbished thanks to Communist China aggressive moves in the Pacific and threats to launch missiles at Guam and Hawaii so, along with Wake Island, located 1500 miles northeast of Guam, they are being prepared in case of attack and to redistribute Navy, Air Force and Marine Corp air assets.
