I knew there was a reason to hate "French Press" coffee.
As described in "Most Delicious Poison" by Noah Whiteman, a 2020 study of something like half a million coffee drinkers in Norway found that adults who drank unfiltered coffee (like the stuff made in a French press) have a significantly higher chance over a 20 years span of dying. Seems that there are two chemicals in coffee - cafestol and kahweol - that mess with your body's cholesterol-processing mechanism. For some reason, making coffee with a paper filter means much less of those chemicals make it through to the final cup.
Whiteman, a molecular biologist who knows his shit, was so put off by this finding that he completely stopped making coffee with a French press....
Me, I say use the thing to make tea - where you want the leaves to have free rein in the hot water, and then be easy to keep from going into your cup.
