"Day the earth stood still" got some great reviews with a little snark. They credit the director for casting Keanu in a emotionless role of the alien. Further added that it was a role that he was born for.
"Yesterday, Reince Priebus called this whole story a 'nothing burger,'" he said. "Well these emails have turned it into an all-you-can-prosecute buffet."

There are plenty of movies that could stand being remade. If I taught a film course, I'd suggest to my students that they take, for example, "The Beast of Yucca Flats" and do it better. Shouldn't be hard!

If I had the backing, I’d remake The Creature from the Black Lagoon in an instant.

And rtpoe, I don’t think you could get anyone to say “Flag on the moon...how did it get there?” with the same raw conviction as Coleman Francis. Or get someone with the range of a Tor Johnson.

That's occurred to me a few times. Can't believe no one's touched it. Someone could make a really BADASS movie out of that material, taken seriously.

Exactly! Although I've heard if the Wolfman remake (which might actually be good) does well, they're going to go ahead with a Creature remake. Of course by that point they might be confident enough to fuck it up.

EDIT: There's a bootleg Wolfman trailer online, it looks like it could be pretty cool. However, I just IMDB'd the Creature remake and the guy who is attached to direct has a crappy resume. Sahara? Really?

Oh, I didn't know they were even doing a Wolfman remake. I sure hope that works out, 'cause their intention to reboot that and the Dracula series with Van Helsing was a fucking disaster.

The Creature introduced me to science fiction!  I caught it on TV one day as a little kid and was hooked on the exotic stuff from then on.  I always loved how it took the whole crazy "quest for the missing link" logic and shoved it even further back -- to the missing link between fish and man!  And the Creature looked good -- the very first story I ever wrote was about a man who finds himself on a planet where everyone looks like the Creature.

Plus, it was so easy to root for the Creature -- poor soul (sole?), all he ever wanted to do was get his webbed claws on Julie Adams or Lori Nelson ...

I'm also fascinated by werewolves -- but as deliberate, self-controlled, intelligent shapeshifters, the whole old berserker thing doesn't do it for me.

The flick was quite innovative for casting two women, Leslie Neilsen and Anne Fancis in the lead roles in a costly space epic.  I still don't know the guy on the left is.

Haha... very funny.  Leslie Nielson is the guy on the left, but you already knew that.  Cheeky!!

TDTESS is getting remade for the exact same reason that any/every film/tv show gets remade: money.

It has nothing to do with whether the original was so much better than the remake (Wages of Fear, La Femme Nikitia, a hundred+ others) or whether the original is still culturally relevant. It's just potential revenue.

Not only am I sick of remakes (offhand, I can't think of one I've seen that was better than the original film) I'm sick to death of seeing the same damn actors over and over and over and over. Yeah, I get it... Keaunu wants his $25 million dollar paycheck and the studio figures his participation will insure financial success for the movie. But for pete's sake: if I NEVER saw another movie with him, or Cruise, or Stallone/Schwartzeneger/etc..., or a full dozen OTHER guys who bring in 10s of millions per picture... turning out the same uninspired dreck every single time... well then, I'd not miss them at all.

This applies not just to actors of course, but also to writers, directors, executive producers, etc... imagine what fresh new talents might become available to audiences if the same cadre of 100 principals finally decided they have enough $ and retired?

lord of the rings trilogy vs lord of the rings (1987 I believe) :P

hey I thought Van Helsing was hilarious...Dracula was never scary to me so I prefer the hands-on over the top action approach in monster-movies :P

They should try a couple of good Anime remakes... I mean good, Dragon Ball has potential since Chow is working on it, but i'm not 100% sure. I for instance would love to see a high-budget GTO live action movie with a guy who actually looks like Eikichi. Also nice would be bleach.... I wonder who would play Rangiku

And the reviews are in.

Except for some contrived FX sequences, it stinks.

I love Richard Schickel's comments at

Suffice it to say that these morons have, quite simply, turned The Day the Earth Stood Still on its head and what's falling out of its pockets in that upended state is a stream of junk.

He concludes his review by noting "...Twentieth Century Fox has put out a nice two-disc DVD of the Robert Wise original. It cost less than two tickets to this travesty and I urge it upon you."

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance

And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow...

Bummer. For all of his acting flaws, I've always enjoyed Keanu Reeves.

Although Bill and Ted was probably the pinnacle of his career...
