I was flipping channels one night and kept coming back to it because everything else on was even worse.

They made a cartoon about it when I was a lad...so a bunch of us got curious and watched it. We know what it is because nothing is truly obscure.

you may want to be aware of the sodium, though.

I'm always puzzled by references to removing 'sodium' from one's diet.  I wouldn't expect it possible to have sodium in one's diet to begin with.

The last time I recall seeing sodium was in high school Chemistry class.  Highly volatile when it comes in contact with water, a bit of nasty work.  Got to witness an explosion after the teacher dropped a tiny chunk of it into a (strongly reinforced) test tube of water.  Good times.

Now sodium chloride in one's diet?  Yeah, I can see that.

By the same token, I don't think I need to worry about hydrogen in my diet.  Although I'm pretty sure I can drink dihydrogen monoxide with no ill effects.

Definitely learn to make water your friend.  Cutting soft drinks out of my regular diet intake made a real difference in my weight loss efforts.  I dropped about 20 pounds within 3 months without any other significant change in diet or exercise routine.

There's a bit more to it than that, as folks with high blood pressure find out. Sodium tends to stimulate and confuse electrical signals in the heart. Potassium has much less effect. Sodium chloride in the diet isn't good for high blood pressure. Potassium chloride has much less effect, tastes the same and costs about ten times as much.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium#Biological_role

Interesting.  Although further up the page it clearly establishes pure sodium as being quick to oxidize and reacting violently with water.  And given that our body has a significant water content....

From this article the one thing I'm not getting from it is that sodium is transported in its raw, unstable form.  One moment they're talking sodium ions, the next moment they're talking sodium chloride.

Anyway Pedonbio, if you're planning on snacking on some pure sodium, could you get someone to put the event on YouTube?
