In reply to:

there was one other canonical (on-screen) reference, which argues *against* them being separate races:

In another DS9 episode, three Klingons from the original series -- Kor (Errand of Mercy), Kang (Day of the Dove), and Koloth (Trouble of Tribbles) -- showed up at DS9, still alive after over a hundred years. They were played by the original actors, too.

However, they were all wearing the "modern" version of the makeup!

Oh heck Adama, that's right, I forgot about that.  I should have asked that Klingon about it when I heard that theory.  Didn't watch DS9 as much as I did NextGen or TOS, so I didn't think about that point.

I think I have his email address, maybe he can add something (if anyone really cares that is, but heck, this IS the OT forum...  )

The inconsistencies between TOS and the newer treks are numerous. Even ST: The Next Generation produced a few. Remember the conjoined Trill ambassador Beverly Crusher fell in love with?  Doesn't look a thing like Jadzia Dax.

In the 8th TNG movie the Defiant is nearly destroyed and requires a few months in dry-dock for repairs. In the fall it was never mentioned on DS9. Brian Bragga just decided to ignore it.
It's also strange that the ship  performed so poorly against the Borg. The Defiant Class was originally started to combat the Borg. The Defiant of DS9 was an improvement over all other models. Chief Miles O'Brien saw to that.

aren't there a lot more inconsitancy issues than this?

i still haven't been able to get into the Enterprise series.... i just miss Kirk and Picard. and Scott Bakula just looks funny; hard to take him seriously...

plus, whenever they have time travel in there, it just ruins everything... didn't they already have the time traveling thing on one of the first episodes?

the only way i'll watch Enterprise again is if they had Q guest star.

but eh... with the new (and possibly last) Stargate SG-1 season in production, i do need to find a sci-fi show to keep me occupied..

Have you checked out Mutant X and Andromeda?
Not bad stuff for syndication.

Mutant X... OMG... i saw it once and just threw up! sure the girls are kinda cute, but that doesn't make a show good... and anyway... there's a REASON that that show is only on TV on Sunday afternoons...

and Andromeda, i haven't really watched... i still can't picture Hercules in space...

Ah, syndication.  Can't say much for Mutant X, as it has Victora Pratt but not much else.  Andromeda hit its best stride around its second season, but I've lost interest.  I like Ryder and Doig on that show, liked Laura Bertram best in the first season when she seemed ditzy but was in fact very shrewd.  Stargate SG-1 has finally begun to intrigue me, sorry to see it shutting down; curiously enough, it had some of the better internal logic around.  Like Andromeda, Relic Hunter may have passed its bloom; the first season or so was too silly for wrods, and now it's feeling worn-out -- but for a while there, Tia Carrere was in top form.  And I still like to check out The Lost World; with Sheena gone, Jennifer O'Dell fills my she-Tarzan quota.  But all in all, syndication seems to understand our needs better than the big leagues ...

Zasha - the sad truth is that on an almost episode by episode basis Star Trek introduces irreconcilable continuity. Of course as generally there isn't so much of an overall storyline for it as show you just have to ignore that.

That being said - I find Enterprise in itself to be one big continuity error and a prosaic one at that.

-- Actually, Archer's crew ran into the Klingons back in the first episode, and have a couple of times since.

-- I agree that it would have been really nice continuity-wise if the "Enterprise" Klingons had looked like the original series Klingons, but I guess they didn't want to go for it.  One of the many opportunities they've missed out on to show the genesis of some classic Trek elements.

-- The time-travel episode: though many speculations have been made about the differences in Klingon appearance, that was the only occasion where any explanation was even _hinted_ at onscreen.

The episode didn't involve a change in history -- what happened was that the DS9 crew traveled back in time into the "Trouble With Tribbles" episode, using camera tricks to splice the DS9 crew into the original 1967 footage.  The human characters are amazed to see what Klingons used to look like back then, and ask Worf for an explanation.  All he says is "They _are_ Klingons.  It is not something we discuss with outsiders." (if I remember correctly).  And that's all that was said.

Maybe it was a temporary abberation that started after the 2150s (Archer's time) and ended before the 2280s (the time of the first movie, I think).

The reason Klingons look different in Next Generation and the Movies as opposed to the original series is explained in 'Enterprise'. It is due to a virus that dissolved the cranial ridges. The virus was passed on to descendants, but a cure was later found.

This storyline, seen in the Enterprise episodes "Affliction" and "Divergence", was intended in part to explain why Original Series Klingons had a more Human appearance, and later Klingons did not. The writers also hoped the two-parter would shed some light on the change in the Klingons' temperament and disposition between the TOS and TNG eras.
