Whether they like it or not, the English, Scottish and Welsh are all British. The main island is Great Britain and everyone on it is British. Even if all the countries were independent, the inhabitants of those countries would still be British as a matter of geography. All English are British but not all British are English. An Englishman or Scotsman can't cease to be British any more than they can cease being European, since Great Britain is in Europe (and by European I mean geographically, not with regards to the EU).

After all a Texan is a Texan but he is still an American.

Let's not get too far off topic, but a sense of national identity in Scotland / Northern Ireland / Wales and even England is incredibly strong, and while we all live in Great Britain, a lot of people consider themselves Scottish / Irish / Welsh / English before being British...

I'm from Scotland, and my parents were from England (London in fact). I consider myself Scottish, English and of course British. Even though people from Wales,Scotland and England consider themselves Welsh,Scottish and English first and British second, we are all British whether we like it or not. Northern Ireland is a bit trickier as Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain but it IS part of the UK. So they are UK citizens, but not British. Which is why the Olympic team is officially known as Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Actually Alaska IS part of the North American continent. I believe you meant it is not part of the contiguous 48 states. Hawaii is not part of North America, that is true. Just a minor clarification. After all, if you want to drive from Ohio to Alaska, all you have to do is enter Canada and take the Alaska highway. Driving to Hawaii will merely get you wet at best.
