Some REALLY random miscellaneous boobage....
As seen in "Modern Doctor Looks at Historic Medical Cases (feat. Rohin Francis) - Objectivity 261" on Brady Haran's "Objectivity" YouTube channel, where he visits with Keith Moore, Head Librarian of the Royal Society.
In this episode Rohin "Medlife Crisis" Francis joined them to look over some items of medical interest.
This particular illustration was submitted in July 1669 by Dr. William Durston. His patient reported an immense growth in both her breasts literally overnight, and he was writing to the Royal Society for their advice. Rohin speculated that there are some conditions that can cause unusual swelling in the breast, but they rarely affect both - and not to such an extent....
Interesting. I’m surprised they didn’t assume her breasts swelled from unclean thoughts and stoned her to death.
I remember reading an article that in past civilizations, peasant women with unusually large breasts would be used as nurse maids for children of royalty and the nobility so that royal and noble women wouldn't have to worry about not having sufficient milk for their brats. Also, it was not unusual for royalty and the nobility to collect peasant people with uncommon or strange physical characteristics to collect them for entertainment or curiosity purposes and they would reward those who brought such people to their courts. So, I don't think many got stoned because their capture could be profitable.
