It's french for driveway. In large hotels like the Luxor where I work at, we have Valet, which you trust your car keys to a stranger ( bizarre if you think about ) which is another french word, and the main **103** driveway is called Porte Cochere where Valet works. Terms like these are supposed to give an air of luxury and exclusivity. Terms like these became popular in the late 19th, early 20th century when France and french were thought to be a big deal.
