Speaking of Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra: on July 14, after a rather quick six years, the New Horizons mission will initiate a fly-by of Pluto.

I thought Ceres was the largest asteroid. Wasn't it originally classified as a planet, or dwarf planet shortly after discovery?

Actually, it was 9 1/2 years (launched in January 2006), but yes, it hauled ass getting out there.
Science campaign is currently in full swing, and the New Horizons spacecraft will be out of communication with Earth and the Deep Space Network until tomorrow afternoon, U.S. time. Even then, it'll be a quick "I'm alive!" message, followed by the downlink of the first images on the 15th. Full downlink of the science data is expected to take up to a YEAR.

And there I was complaining about my download speeds...

Yeah, downlink speeds are expected to vary from 4 kilobits/s all the way down to 200 bits/s. And since they can't be running downlink operations constantly, there's going to be some pauses.

That said, they hope to have a full set of lossily compressed imaged downlinked in two months. The remaining 14 months are for the lossless compression versions.

WE HAVE DOWNLINK.

New Horizons has established contact with the Madrid station of the Deep Space Network. All systems are nominal, and the data storage is full!
Can't wait to see what they got out of the pass...  ;D

Just doing this to "rename" the "Charon" thread into something that better represents the direction it's taking.

And we have new pictures!
(click on them for the full sized images)

Taken by the spacecraft's LORRI instrument, this is a shot of the edge of the large, heart-shaped flat spot.

A full-frame shot of Charon, showing a surprisingly crater-free surface.

These shots have both led the team to hypothesize that there is an active geological cycle of some sort on Pluto and Charon.

They've started giving informal names to things. The International Astronomical Union has the final say.

The flyby pictures are great, but I really wish they would send up a rover like Curiosity on Mars. Heck, I wish there was rovers on all the solid planes and moons!
