There's an App for that... or there will be.

iPad, the destroyer: 19 things it will kill

I was mildly interested until I read the item "Stacks of papers in office meetings" (as in the iPad will kill them).

I'm old enough to remember the first time they promised us the paperless office... how's that working out for you where you work?

The local Best Buy store had three on demo yesterday, so I messed around with one for awhile. They are easy to use, fun to play with, but I'm not shelling out $500 for one; at least not yet. I'll wait for ipad2 that features a webcam and laser cannon. Why didn't I invest in Apple a long time ago? Oh ya, I had no money.

...and I STILL have no money. Goshdurnit! Maybe I can pick up an iPad and install iCardboard on it.

In the meantime, I will follow this flowchart, with the following additions:

Do you have kids under 18?
---- They will drop your ipad.

Do you have kids over 18?
---- They will drop your ipad.

Do you have friends?
---- They will drop your ipad.

Do you have parents or grandparents?
---- They will drop your iPad...in water.

Do you have roommates?
---- They will get **92** and smash your iPad.

Do you live in California?
---- The earthquakes will drop your iPad.

Do you know Chuck Norris?
---- Your iPad will drop itself.

Do you live in Soviet Russia?
---- Your iPad will drop you.

Do you have pets?
---- They will **107** on your iPad.

Do you live in Detroit?
---- They will steal your iPad.

Do you work for Microsoft?
---- They will torture your iPad.

Cult of Mac blog: "The iPad Review for the Rest of Us"

My favorite quote from the review:

"Is it good for games?
Heck, yeah. It’s awesome for games. The kids fought tooth and nail about who got to play with the iPad, especially Flight Control HD (in 3D). We eventually had to take it away. The bigger screen make it much better for gaming than the iPhone or iPod touch. For a start, your fingers don’t get in the way as much. The accelerometer works great as a control mechanism.

It might be good for kids, but what about the older generation?
We had to take it away from my mother too."

I was watching a 30 min preso online about a month or so ago.  It was by a young professor geared towards cloud computing geeks, Twitter, etc.  It was actually pretty engaging, considering the "I will grant you 30 seconds of my time" mentality that YouTube and friends have managed to culture into me.

The vast majority of the preso had nothing to do with the iPad, but he did make a brief mention of it and of the utility of things in general, and in particular whether it could fit in your pocket.  He specifically mentioned the Swiss Army knife, drawing the analogy that since the Swiss Army knife was a clever idea, having a larger version of it that you can lay on your kitchen countertop (or cram into an adequately sized drawer) where you can "flip out" a spatula, knife, ladle, etc, doesn't make it more clever than the pocket-sized tool.

That was one of those "things that make you go 'hhhmmm'" moments, at least for me.

Somewhat orthogonal, I read some blog somewhere where the author pointed out that technological convergence didn't eliminate the need/desire for a dedicated desktop calculator.  In his case, he means something which sits on his desk's surface, and not the computer metaphor.  What's more, his calculator uses paper tape.

And I could see that as well.  I'll use my cell phone's tip calculator (I'm lazy) or in a pinch, the built-in calculator, although I'll admit it's a bear to use.  If I'm on my Mac, either I'll use the calculator applet, or I'll fire up Python in a Terminal window and go that route.  I personally can't see the benefit to having the paper tape, probably because I could see myself surrounded by the li'l devils and not knowing what context each belongs to (plus there's the whole requirement of having to buy yet another supply); if I need something with more oomph, there's always spreadsheets and printers.

As for the iPad itself, we'll see.  If I had $500 burning a hole in my pocket, I can think of various other things I'd rather be tinkering with, like FreeNAS or OpenFiler.  :)

Man, I just can't get my head around that.  Money has never been so easy for me that I'd go and destroy something I had to work hard to make the money to buy.   >:(

I apologize in advance if I post duplicate pictures in any of the picture threads I deal in.  My MO in getting pictures of one girl is to rip her Instagram.  That ends up with me having up to 2000 pics of her.  I've tried almost half a dozen duplicate finder programs, and none of them find all of the duplicates I inevitably end up with.

What gave you the idea for the video?

Pretty much that I've seen people smash Wiis and Playstation 3s and stuff, so this was something new. I wanted to be the first one to do it before other people did it. It was just something to do. I knew some people would hate it, but I didn't think that many people would hate it. A lot of people are leaving really bad comments.

Like what?

Some people are saying I should've donated the money instead of wasting it. But my family donates money all the time. Last year we gave $10-15,000 to the Make a Wish Foundation (my little sister is sick).  It's not like we're greedy, it's not like we did it to rub it in and say, "We have the money, oh look at us."

Are you glad you did it?

I love that I did it. I did it with my money. And we actually ended up  buying two more iPads that we kept. The one that I bought was the 16Gb. I had to save up a bit to get it, I don't just walk around with $500 in my pocket. But the fact that so many people hate  it -- I don't want to say I love that, but it's funny.

1. iSuppli: "iPad's Actual Cost is $260"

2. iPad sale price: $500 (for cheapest model)

3. Profit on each tablet sold: $240 (more or less)

4. 300,000 iPads sold in the first weekend

5. Total profit in one weekend: $72 million (300K * $240)

Damn. Time to buy shares in AAPL, MSFT and GOOG, for real.

While that may be the cost of the machine, do not forget advertising costs, merchandiser retail cost, tariffs, etc, etc. The real profits are not the machine itself but the software and applications that are needed to make it useful. Gillete does not make much profit, if any, on their shavers but they clean up on the razor blades. Apple's profits mostly come from software ,not hardware.

I bought an ipad and returned it the next day.  Definitely wasn't for me, way too controlling and limited for what I wanted to be able to do(like play flash videos and not have to get all apps from apple).  I recommend testing it for a while before you actually buy it.  Remember, there are over 100 tablets coming out this year and Android is looking to be a definite winner it's going to be powering alot of those tablets.  Also, if your wondering about apps, Android gained 10,000 apps in March alone.  At the Iphone OS 4.0 this year, steve jobs was asked the question "What do you think about unsigned apps" (ie, anything that doesn't come from the app store) and his reply was "Android has a porn apps market, we don't want to go down that path".  I don't know about you guys, but that's almost total incentive to buy Android. I'm just saying, don't be so quick to get the first tablet out.  There are some really really good ones coming out.  The Notion Ink "Adam" is going to be running Android, has 24 hour battery life, several hundred hour battery life as an ebook reader, can render 1080p video, runs android 2.1, has 3 usb ports, an hdmi port, 3 rotatable webcam, plays flash videos with hardware acceleration, and uses a multicore Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU/GPU that's capable of awesome power and insane battery life, and it will cost less.
