The NY Times has a very nice slide show (mentioned above) for many of the notables who passed on this year:
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/obituaries/20100329_NOTABLEDEATHS.htmlThey include not only entertainers and sportsmen, but people from the world of fine arts, business, politics (Richard C. Holbrooke), science (Benoit Mandelbrot), and literature (Jose Saramago).
They also have further essays and appreciations here:
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/12/26/magazine/2010lives.html?ref=obituariesThough some are too recent to have been included:
Jonah "Bud" Greenspan, Olympic filmmaker: "Sometimes the essence of the Olympic Games can be found in people who don’t stand on the victory podium."
Fred Foy, radio announcer: "A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi-Yo Silver!' ... The Lone Ranger!"
And there are those that they seem to have forgot:
Harold Gould, character actor. White hair, big mustache.... First pick for Mr. Cunningham on "Happy Days", he turned out to be unavailable...
Morrie Yohai, inventor of Cheez Doodles
Edward Uhl, inventor of the bazooka
Leonard Skinner, gym teacher and realtor: Born Forby Leonard Skinner, he worked at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL. He enforced the rules on hair length far too often for the likes of a couple of students who had a rock band. The band couldn't decide on a name until they settled on that of their nemesis - only they changed all the vowels to "Y" in the hopes that they wouldn't get sued....
