The graving dock at Newport Shipbuilding is a marvel all in itself.  It's got an elevated platform which allows for the ship to be constructed at ground level until it's time to launch, at which time the platform is lowered to the bottom of the graving slip and then the slip is flooded, floating the ship.  Imagine the mechanics involved to lower that kind of sheer weight!

Two days ago was the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. That is something of a marvel, but I was recalling that I, thru the miracle of television and time zone coincidences, saw the original as it happened. The formal ceremony took place in London such that it was morning in Seattle, and my teacher, who was something of an anglophile, got dibs on one of the two televisions the school had. One of the U.S. broadcast networks arranged for an open phone line to the BBC:

As for me, the first satellite TV event broadcasted that I remember well was the 1964 Tokyo Olympics on the old black and white Zenith TV. That was truly amazing at the time. I remember when Cassius Clay won his gold medal and Don Scholander won five gold medals in swimming. I was a young pup of eight years at the time. I remember our teacher in school in Mexico made us do a report on the Olympics and for us to do at least three sports and do an essay on them ( I went to a Jesuit catholic school and expectations were much higher then ). I did swimming, boxing and 100 meter race which was won by " Bullet " Bob Hayes at ten seconds flat. He then went to the Dallas Cowboys and became a feared wide receiver due to his speed. All natural, no additives like now. In 1968 my family got tickets to see Track and Field events at the Mexico Olympics and I was there when Bob Beamon became the first man to jump over 29 feet in the long jump and later saw Dick Fostbury win the high jump with his then top secret Fossbury flop.

In the 3 biggest TV countries, it was the televising of a special event that really made those little boxes take off with the general public. In Great Britain, it was the Coronation. In Japan, the Wedding of Emperor Hirohito.

I had to look it up, sol. It was on ABC, the network nobody watches now. I doubt we saw the whole thing, but it was more than an hour.
