No matter what, it is a *good* thing for America that Bin Laden is dead. He was the person responsible for 9/11 and his death is a signal to the world. The signal? That if you wantonly slaughter Americans, America *will* hunt you down and kill you. That's an important message for any state to send. I've always been pro war in Afghanistan, actually. Killing Bin Laden and dismantling the Taliban should have been our ONLY objective from the start. The war in Iraq never had *anything* to do with that, we should never have been there. I stand aghast still that my fellow countrymen allowed a conflation between the serious need to invade Afghanistan - and Bushy's costly grudge match.
Think about this though: right now, our service people are in the gravest danger of the war. Withdrawing from the middle east is going to be... unpleasant. We won the war by sending a signal to the "Muslim" radicals. In my opinion, the best thing we can do for our people (to get the most of them home possible) is to send another signal - this time to the moderates (i.e. the majority of Muslim people). We need to close Gitmo, and all the other black prisons, start dealing fairly *immediately*. Right now, the continued existence of these prisons is the radical's greatest recruiting point. And honestly? It's time to start dealing with our prisoners of war, tying up loose ends, and doing what we can to ratchet down tensions... time to GTFO.
