I used the telegraph and Morse code.

So did I ! When I was a kid in Mexico, my third grade teacher had us do an assignment which was to send him a telegram. It cost one Peso ( exchange rate was 12.50 Pesos for one US Dollar in 1965 ) for twenty characters per message. That was cheap but on the way to the telegraph office, two cops stopped us for speeding which was bullshit. Since my mom was white with green eyes they figured she was a gringa ( American )  and of course, in those days Mexicans just knew all Americans were rich so they decided to go for a " Mordida " which is Spanish for bite. The cops were satisfied when she gave them 40 Pesos so they would scram and leave us alone. Ah yes, good ol' public servants. Anyways, it cost only three Dollars or so but those Dollars were worth a whole lot more than todays Dollars so that telegram was pretty expensive as far as my mother was concerned. As for Morse code, as far as I know Navy Radiomen were/are still taught Morse for emergency use and we were all taught a few S.O.S. codes just in case. I retired close to twenty years ago and I don't know if the Navy still does this.

Gunsmoke began on radio. I met Parley Baer, the radio voice of Chester (and the mayor on early episodes of the Andy Griffith Show), at a meeting of the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters many years ago. A very kind man to a radio drama buff who was then very young.

William Conrad was Marshall Dillon on radio and Howard McNear -- Floyd the barber on Andy Griffith -- was Doc. It was probably the all time best-produced series on radio. It was also a fair bit darker, and Miss Kitty was pretty obviously a prostitute.  (See? And you thought radio drama was all dorky melodrama. The Shadow was a kid's show, people.)

Thank you, Robin. I also remember the early t.v. shows, when "Call Marshall Dillon" brought James Arness out of Miss Kitty's room putting on his shirt. There was a certain understated elegance about that.
