You remember Gunsmoke before Festus.
Gunsmoke began on radio. I met Parley Baer, the radio voice of Chester (and the mayor on early episodes of the
Andy Griffith Show), at a meeting of the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters many years ago. A very kind man to a radio drama buff who was then very young.
William Conrad was Marshall Dillon on radio and Howard McNear -- Floyd the barber on
Andy Griffith -- was Doc. It was probably the all time best-produced series on radio. It was also a fair bit darker, and Miss Kitty was pretty obviously a prostitute. (See? And you thought radio drama was all dorky melodrama.
The Shadow was a
kid's show, people.)
