One car I've lusted after since I was a teenager, the 1969 Chevrolet Corvette with a big block 427 cubic inch engine with 435 horsepower and which is a T-top and red color.

Still one of my favorite Corvettes along with the split window coupe from the previous generation

Was it?  Once the 5 mph bumper law came into effect, I recall very few cars that looked particularly nice. The svelte forms of the late sixties were bulked up and styling dumbed down.  There were a handful of exceptions, but I felt most of the cars of the 70s were built like cheap tanks.  The end of the decade also showed the beginning of such ridiculous corporate design sharing that by the 80s you couldn’t tell one GM from another without a nameplate.

I do remember that the best selling single car in the 70's was the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and it had displaced the Chevrolet Impala but by the late 70's, GM did start to amalgamate their divisions in many respects. For example, when I worked at the gas station in the early 70's, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick had a 455 cubic inch engines for example but not one had compatible parts and their parts could not be used in the other cars. Chevrolet and Cadillac also had unique engines to their brands but by the 80's, GM consolidated their engines and they are now Chevrolet or Cadillac engines. Of course, GM killed Oldsmobile and Pontiac eventually.

From 1927 to 1940, the Lasalle was a GM luxury car built by Cadillac and World War 2 killed it. This is a Corvette that was built for Cadillac in order to try to revive the brand, but it didn't work since Cadillac customers at the time didn't like small cars anyways.
