Pneumonia
« on: June 09, 2013, 09:35:23 PM »
So I just got out of the hospital the other day after going to the emergency room for not being able to breathe. Turned out to be a really bad case of pneumonia and I could have died if I hadn't made the decision to go in.

Anyway if any of you have any tips on how to recover faster from respiratory junk I'd be most pleased. They gave me an inhaler and antibiotics but I'm still so damn tired all the time and cough up stuff. It's been days. I feel like I shouldn't be **83** for most of the day.

Pneumonia is not to be fucked with.

A surprizing number of young, otherwise healthy people die of it each year because they thought they were tough. Read about Jim Henson's death. I've never had it, but a doctor friend of mine explained it thusly: My lungs are always fighting of the various insults that get into them each time I breathe. When an infection, viral or bacterial, gets a start in my lungs, that is pneumonia. The problem is that lungs have to keeps working all the time; if an infection gets a "foothold", it has already overwhelmed your immune defenses. Absent some kind of intervention, you will die. Aside from that, the longer treatment is delayed from the onset of fever, the longer the period of recovery. My doc friend said that his rule of thumb is 1:8-- Add one day of recovery (after fever disappears) for every three hours treatment was delayed. In Henson's case, he delayed too long.
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

I had it -- and acute appendicitis at the same time. In my experience, there's now way to speed up recovery except being sensible: take it easy, get as much **82** as you can, and take all the antibiotics as instructed.

Good luck and get well soon!

Yeah I tried to tough it out for two days because at first I thought it was just a bad cough or something (I'm a smoker) but then I coughed to blackout three times in one night and could barely inhale or exhale so I went in to the ER. They said one more night could have done me in.

So it's normal for me to feel like resting all the time?

Needless to say, I'm quitting smoking. Been pushing it until I really can't take it anymore before each smoke now. Doctor said it wasn't smoking related at all but I appreciate breathing so much I know I want out.

Good for you if you quit smoking. Never been a smoker myself ( I have plenty of other self destructive habits  :(  ) but a friend of mine successfully quit smoking when he switched to electronic cigarettes. The upfront cost was high but the return of investment paid for itself in less than six months since he was no longer buying coffin nails. Just a suggestion, there may be other ways. Both my parents started smoking in the 1940's when Doctors used to recommend brands in advertising and quit cold turkey in the 1980's when cigarettes became too expensive. So no one way is the holy grail but at least you are taking a first step.  :)

I have an electronic cigarette but I hate it. Doesn't fill my nicotine addiction or the slow burning taste so good

He told me to go for a good jog in the morning and before my evening meal to help me lose weight, **82** better and quit smoking. He said it's a miracle quit plan. So once I'm recovered I'm gonna do it.

So how's the recovery been going?

And if you need a recommendation for an exercise program, I can always recommend CrossFit. ;)

Yeah my lung capacity has been back to normal for a couple weeks now (and now I've slipped on my jogging routine, of course. tsk tsk me).

Not at all. Regardless of age, it is too fucking easy to die of that stuff.
