Very fond of a lady who's spoken for.
« on: November 11, 2013, 02:00:04 PM »
Pretty much what the topic title says. I really REALLY like a lady friend of mine who's been in a committed relationship for years and is happy. She's a close friend as well. Her man is a good dude.

I won't say anything to her because I don't want there to be any awkwardness. I don't want to say the other L word, but you know. Very fond of her. She's beautiful and smart and funny.

No question really. I guess I needed to vent.

Sucks. I'm sure a ton of you have had similar experiences.

I've had several best friends who also happened to be women (I'm male), and as soon as they got married that was it -- no more lunches or coffees and, in one case, no more contact.

This has happened even though I have always tried to become friends of their partners, as well, and do things with them both. It has really hurt.

I dunno.

I'm a big fan of working to remain conscious of, and connected with people in my life. People drift in, drift out, and some stick around. Fate always has a card to play.

I think I may have presented this poorly. I meant that I'm attracted to her and I'd like to be with her, but I can't and I can't tell anyone in my life about it because I feel that'd be unfair to her and our friendship.

I feel your pain, brother. I've been in that situation more times than I care to count. Sometimes it's due to poor timing on my part -- admiration from afar and then when I finally screw up my courage to approach her that way, I learn (just in the nick of time, and usually by total accident) that she is currently involved with someone else. So I have almost never had to experience the embarrassment of having the "I like you, but I'm seeing someone else" talk. Which is good for my ego and enables me to "save face"...but it still sucks a bit.

My worst case of this was when I was invited to the wedding of a lady who I had had my eye on for some time, and we were (and remain) on good terms. So we got to talking pre-ceremony and she let drop that if only we'd been able to see each other more often perhaps we could have been a couple, because she liked me too...only that her now-husband actually stepped up and did the deed. That was a tough one :)

A nearly-as-bad case was a woman who started out as a (social media) friend-of-a-friend and now is one of my very best friends. I joke with her all the time that, since I can't have her (she's a very happily-married wife & mother), she'd better work on a cloning machine because she is just about everything I'd want in a woman. That one was a mutual case of "Where were you 10 years ago? Because if you and I had been in the same town, we'd be married with six offspring by now" :)

When you're in that situation, the only honorable thing to do is to go home and lick your wounds. You have to uphold the sanctity of her current relationship. Don't be that guy who tries to break up someone else's relationship in order to get your turn at bat. Karma has a way of biting one rather badly, and you don't want to be on the receiving end of it. Do unto others, and all that.

So, yeah...I feel your pain.

I think you presented the situation clearly and very well. I think I didn't. What I meant was, stay in touch. Who knows, her significant other may drive off a cliff.

This is true. But don't be caught tampering with his brakes ;)

Yeah I'd never willingly become that guy. I hate that guy.

but I was at a party with her at one point she was going off to get a drink away from the pack and I was heading to the similar area for the same. I did at that time harbor a secret fantasy she'd pull me aside and kiss me.

Man, that'd be awesome.

I would never willingly be that guy though I would give in to an advance. Not that she'd make one. Like I said, she's by all marks happy.

All you can do, is wish her well. Try and remain her friend, but make no advances. Of course, if she ever becomes single, get in there, but don't hold your breath :)

That's the hard bit. As a teenager I would have held out on blind ABSOLUTELY BLIND hope. As I've been there before though, and never seen it happen, with anyone else either, I know better.

I think we're close enough too that I'm firmly a friend. Even if she were single it wouldn't be exciting for her. I've deduced that women like that a lot more than men. At least in my experience.

I'm not saying she's like that, the type that needs thrills and wouldn't date a friend. She's probably the type that would, but I'm trying to make excuses and make myself feel better.

Well I am glad everyone is in agreement that you do not want to be that guy who tried to be the home wrecker.

I have lived through a similar deal.  It took me 15 years to get over a taken woman, but I finally moved on.  Did I do anything special to overcome my crush?  Well, one day I did make a list of all the things about her I found annoying.  Start with musical tastes - those are rarely identical between any man and woman.  Then think of how she doesn't like the same sports teams you like.  Then think about how there are foods you like that she would find gross.  By the end of the list you will say to yourself "Yeah forget this woman.  There are others out there better!!"  Well, hopefully.

In the meantime, I shall remind us all of the song that captured this pain:

I actually got the "list" advice from someone already and it didn't work. She and I are in agreement on nearly everything which in itself is a problem because it'd be boring.

Try and imagine her beating up your mother. With a dead cat. Just before the big game starts.

Ugh so I got **92** last Tuesday and ended up **92** texting her, letting slip that I had a thing for her.

It was so embarrassing the next day and awkward that I think that alone kind of killed it for me. I feel like an a-1 schlemiel. We're still friends but we had to have that whole "I'm sorry you feel that way/it's cool I'm sorry I brought it up/I'm happy you're happy/blah blah blah" talk.

<--- horse's ass

Oh man, we could have tried to stop you had you posted on here first.  Friends don't let friends text **92**!

At least she knows now.  She will probably avoid you for a few months then she will warm up to you again.  As to whether she likes you back, she might, but being a woman she will surely keep that an unknown for now.
