The Underrated Films Thread

Suggest a film that may not have been hugely popular but is still very good and well worth watching.

I'll start:

Lord of War (2005). Written, produced and directed by Andrew Niccol. Starring Nicolas Cage (who also co-produced), Ethan Hawke, Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan and Ian Holm.

Inspired by the life of infamous Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, the film ends with a postscript that states that private dealers conduct less business than the world's five largest arms exporters: the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, France, and China. Interestingly, these are also the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

"Interrogation Scene"
AOC, HC, TW, BO, KH: FU. FUATH. 100x.

Mute Witness-1995

I have this on VHS.It's a thriller/suspense movie about a woman who is working on a slasher film being made by an American film crew in Russia. She is working in the wardrobe department. She returns to the film set after the day's filming is over and she sees members of the Russian mafia filming a **11** film. She watches the woman being murdered.Of course, the guys filming the murder discover her watching them. The woman is mute, hence the title of the film. The whole movie is basically the Russian mafia chasing her and the police chasing the mafia and the challenges the woman (played by Marina Zudina) faces when she tries to convince everyone as to what she saw.
The movie is excellent and a very good performance by Marina. It has a 80% thumbs up rating on Rottentomatoes.

Saint Jack, a 1979 film starring Ben Gazzara as a small time pimp in Singapore, who comes to the aid of his country by setting up a brothel for the C.I.A.

Night Shift-1982
Directed by Ron Howard
Starring-Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton
This movie is tame by today's standards but still a very funny movie.
It's about 2 guys (Winkler and Keaton) who try to get rich by running a brothel from a morgue. The chemistry between Winkler and Keaton is excellent.Even though it's a comedy, you would have to think that Winkler and Howard were taking a chance with the subject matter considering both were coming off of Happy Days.
I would give it a solid 8 out of 10.

Wavelength (1983).  Robert Carradine & Cherie Currie.

Here's the description from IMDb: "Two young lovers learn that a small group of **09**-like space aliens are marooned on Earth and are being held prisoner at a top secret military facility. The couple then decide to liberate the extraterrestrial castaways and help them make a rendezvous with a rescue ship sent from the alien home planet."

Obviously low budget, no big-name stars, as I've never recognized anyone in another movie, though the leads have done other works, and it never made it to late night cable.  With the exception of E.T., this was the first movie I saw (7 yrs. old) that portrayed aliens as almost non-violent (they did kill people, just to survive), and I understood the concept that the REAL villains were the government.
Embrace the facts, uphold the truth.
