Well I went and did it.

I tried to do some corrections to my project and all I did was make it worse.

I tried to even out the milled out area and I ruined it.

Even though I destroyed the lower receiver and 2 of the top plates of the jig I did learn a lot doing this work.

I am going to sell the 8 inch drill press and then get one that is far more suitable for the work I want to do.

It's going to take me about another 2 months to complete the lower assembly, but at least the lower parts kit is still intact and I do not have to get another one of those.

I hope to finish this before the fall and I am still looking forward to going to a gun range to fire my weapon.

I have received the new lower receiver, but I have to wait until the new jig arrives before I can begin work.

One of main things is that I am not going to do is cut out the trigger slot before all the mill work is completed.

I also learned that I should have gotten a plain aluminum receiver and not one that had been anodized.

It's easier to work with and since I will be painting it later on it really doesn't need to be anodized.

It was an expensive mistake, but at least I will be able to continue now.

An expensive lesson in the fine art of metalcrafting. It's going to feel really great when you take the final product out to the range and show it off!

Thanks rtpoe.

The rest of the weapon will be a lot more expensive even buying the components a part at a time.

I've checked around and building my own is still about 4 to 5 thousand dollars cheaper than buying the complete rifle.

I need to find a local engraver to put my own information where the serial number goes.

The jig arrived today and after reading through the instructions I wish I would have ordered this jig first.

I also need to get a 1/2 inch dia end mill and a 5/8 inch drill bit.

There will be a lot less drilling and about the same amount of milling this time.

There is also one drawback in that the larger the drill bit the longer the length.

I am going to try to saw off about 1/2 in of the drill bits so I can still use the milling tool.

I am going to see if I can save up enough for the next gun show here in Hampton so I can get the upper receiver.

I think while I am waiting I will get this lower receiver engraved with my name, my old service number, and the 2nd amendment to the United States Constitution.

I did a bit of checking around and tried to find out if a locally owned hardware store could help me out.

This store is called "Patrick's Hardware" and they do have the 5/8 " drill bit, but they do not have end-mill bits.

I am going over there tomorrow and pick up the drill bit and I will order the end mill bit.

The gun show will be here in Hampton on July 12-13, 2014.

That's great because I should be able to have enough saved to complete most of my project.

I had heard it said that a person could be on a no fly list but still pass a  background check to purchase a weapon. I don't know if this is true.. I do believe you could be on a no fly list for good reason and still go to a gun show and  purchase anything you want.. There are many loophole's in gun laws that should be addressed..   I have owned firearms for sporting purposes since I was a teen.. I don't understand the Sky is falling mentality of the far right.  Can we not have common sense gun laws?

Prinz, there are two things. First, yes, the statute requiring background checks is specific, that only people with felony convictions or who have been inviluntarily committed to mental hospitals are barred from buying guns. Being on the "no fly list" does not disqualify one. My favorite omission was in the original draft of the bill, but was amended out: People who have been found unfit for military service by reason of mental illness. Guess which executive director of the NRA made sure that was removed.

Last month there was an effort in Congress to add the "no fly list". It was voted down.

The second thing is a simple observation: It is possible to exercise a constitutional right without being a raving paranoid asshole.
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

The main reason I am building my own weapon is not to avoid having it registered.

I have owned several guns in my life and I am sure that they would have been confiscated long ago if I had been on any list.

My main reason is that if I build it then I feel a sense of accomplishment that something I made actually works.

When I worked for Motorola 14 years ago I was part of an assembly team that assembled the Nextel phones in the iDen factory. Something I helped build actually worked.

My dad could build and make anything out of wood and/or metal, but that hair triggered bad temper and overall meanness kept him from using his creativity successfully.

I, on the other hand could only build a fire with wood (and kerosene) and I was lousy in high school  metal shop as well.

Something that there's far, far too little of these days. Not the sense of accomplishment, but the making itself.

The gun show is this weekend and I have saved about $400.00 to shop with.

I had considered taking the Concealed Weapons Course that cost $75, but after researching the VA laws I do not need it.

I have copies of both of my DD 214's and like Florida laws, that is enough to get the permit.

The only difference is that I will have to get a City of Hampton permit and a VA state permit.

The total cost of these should be below $50.00.

I do not need any of these permits to buy the upper receiver parts, but I want to get them anyway so when I do have my weapons I will be legally able to carry.

For you non-military types a DD 214 is a document issued by the armed forces when you complete your enlistment/military service. It contains a lot of information such as your awards/medals, overseas duty stations/theaters of war and the conditions of discharge.

In my case it was honorable.

I do not know what would happen if anyone's discharge was anything but honorable.

For those that may be interested you can check it out here:

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/justicelawlegislation/l/aadischarge1.htm

I will update this thread after the gun show.
