It may be a good thing if this individual bipolar and/or is prone to violence.

I am not qualified to judge either way.

I know a family member who due to the anguish of his childhood he suffered decades with chronic depression and was not diagnosed until 2010. Would this person be prone to commit crimes such as assault and murder or live his life as a productive and stable citizen?

I can only speak for myself and when I was in my early teens I was picked on and beat up. Being nearsighted to the point of being damn near blind I wasn't much of a fighter.
I also had access to firearms during those years, but it never entered my mind to shoot bullies and other jerks.

It is just so damn hard to figure out what is right and what is wrong and what is legal when it comes to guns.

I recommend going to crimelibrary.com for a source on murderers, both serial killers and those who kill for other reasons.

rtpoe, I'm glad to have read your post.  I wonder if it's possible to expand upon that at the state level.

Unfortunately, anyone whom lives in this country will know how easy the pro-gun groups will spin it around in such a way that a simple mental health warning is the quickest way to snag legally bought & owned firearms.

Then again, not all of the notorious shooters had any glimmer of a history of mental health issues.

Embrace the facts, uphold the truth.

One serial killer stands out who killed not only with guns, but with his bare hands.

Edmund Kemper.

You can read about him at:

http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/predators/kemper/edmund_1.html

It's hard sometimes to figure out what triggers these guys in to violence. Abuse? Being bullied? Harassment? PTSD?

The list can go on and on.

There was a book out called "Going Postal" about killing sprees at Post Offices mostly by men, but I think there were some women as well.

Anyway, to get back on the topic of this thread the deal for me moving fell through and so I bought the end mill tool and the end mill bits to complete my lower receiver for my AR-15.

Another part of this project is to acquire an engraving tool because a firearm without a serial number can cause unwanted attention by law enforcement when I take it to the gun range to be sighted in.

Next month I will get another 80% lower receiver as a backup if I have damaged this one too much.

Aye, there's the rub.

How do you spot a potentially dangerous mentally ill person? You cannot force people to be tested - and if you tried, even I would consider that a form of tyranny. And keep in mind, that within my lifetime, homosexuality was technically classified as a mental illness.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in the San Francisco bay area was not that bad when I lived in that area during the 1980's. The buses were another matter entirely.

During my now six decades stumbling around on this planet that was the only city where it was that way with the buses.

The best buses were in Broward county South Florida. They ran like every 20 minutes until midnight.

Here in Hampton, VA there are more female drivers than in any other city I have lived in. I am not complaining mind you and I have a lot of respect for them because there is no way I could handle one of those monsters.

I did learn to drive a wrecker that could haul the 18 wheeler trucks while stationed at NAS Cecil Field, FL. There were only 2 of us in the Weapons Dept area (Yellow Water) who were trained on it.

Getting back to my AR-15 project my results did not turn out quite the way the display pictures of a build certainly do not look like what I have done so far.

First thing I found out was that just any drill press may hinder your progress if it is difficult to work with.

I bought a 8" bench type drill press from Harbor Freight.

In the past I did not live too far from one of these stores so I am familiar with the quality of their tools and machines.

To have all the necessary items to do this sort of project it immediately caught my attention that I made some unfortunate mistakes.

To safely use a drill press as an end mill takes time, patience and skill.
I bought 2 types of drill press vises and I broke the first one because it could not stand up to the pressure I needed to hold the lower receiver jig.

Why do they make drill  press vises that do not line up with the work area on a drill press?
I would only work on this project a couple days in a row, then morphs for a few days or so.

One day I had a idea to see what an end mill would cost and see if I could maybe get a used one.

I found an end mill device that was made to be used with a drill press.

This also caused another headache to deal with.

With this device attached to the work area plate I did not have room to use it.

When I removed the plate and just used the bench plate the drill could not reach the work.

I tried several different ways to complete the milling, but the results were ... dreadful.

I had damaged the lower receiver and at first I did not know if it was usable. For several weeks all worked stopped. There were areas on the lower receiver where I had drilled too deep and I had also damaged the jig by using an incorrect 3/8 inch end mill bit.

The other day I had an idea to use a Dremel type tool to finish and correct what I could.

Today I almost completed my project, but there are still some areas I need to fix before I assemble the lower parts kit to the receiver.

I did put a few parts on it though.

OK. Now this is just fucking insane on the part of the "gun nuts":

Maryland dealer, under pressure from gun-rights activists, drops plan to sell smart gun
- Washington Post, 5/1/14

"A Rockville gun store owner who said he would sell the nation’s first smart gun — even after a California gun store removed the weapon from its shelves to placate angry gun-rights activists — backed down late Thursday night after enduring a day of protests and death threats." (emphasis mine)

Electronic chips in the gun (the Armatix iP1 handgun) communicate with a watch that can be bought separately. The gun cannot be fired without the watch being within a distance of about 10 feet.

"You’re going to get what’s coming to you," was among the messages he received, Mr Raymond said. "They told my business partner they would burn down the shop. I try to be reasonable with people but I guess I made a mistake."

The story has made news as far away as Ireland and New Zealand.

Well, one good way would be a list of people rejected from the Armed Services for mental illness.

I had heard it said that a person could be on a no fly list but still pass a  background check to purchase a weapon. I don't know if this is true.. I do believe you could be on a no fly list for good reason and still go to a gun show and  purchase anything you want.. There are many loophole's in gun laws that should be addressed..   I have owned firearms for sporting purposes since I was a teen.. I don't understand the Sky is falling mentality of the far right.  Can we not have common sense gun laws?

Can we not have common sense gun laws?

When the Gun Lobby "persuaded" Congress to cut the funding of the CDC when they wanted to do some simple, basic research into gun violence.... not a chance in hell.

Define common sense. Fact is, common sense isn't that common. What may be just and right to you can be a intolerable act to someone else. I hate American flag burners and if I had my way I would hang 'em high from their necks and use them as pinatas. To other folks it is a legitimate act of free expression. When I hear people say they just want to register our guns to make sure " the right people " have a gun, who are " the right people " ? Who decides who are " the right people " ? In the 1920's, during the disastrous Weimar Republic, Germany passed legislation for all German citizens to register their weapons. Guess who in the 1930's took advantage of that law ? Please don't tell me it can't happen here. For the last year, as much as the present administration wishes to say there is no smidgen of corruption, the IRS, a federal agency, passed sensitive tax information from the political foes of the administration to those who are its allies. Whatever credibility the IRS had as a political neutral agency is now seen as hopelessly naïve. In what way can we gun owners be made to believe a gun regulatory agency could not be politicized and be unfairly used against us ? What effective restraints against unjust government agency empire building will be in effect ? You have right now the EPA regulating against coal power plants in a way which goes against the will of Congress, i.e. the peoples representatives, with the obvious help of the administration. Where are the checks and balances ? I'm sorry to say this but I just don't believe the other guys are honorable and will respect my right to self defense since they have made up their minds I don't have that right in the manner I see as right and justified. So, you can pass whatever silly laws you want, I'll ignore them because they are unworkable and unjust. Just like the stupid drug war and its hopeless laws.
