Thoughts on "Cosmos" with Neil deGrasse Tyson
« on: March 10, 2014, 07:30:46 PM »
* Tyson's no Carl Sagan, but then no one can be. And he's good enough.
* Nice graphic effects, but they shouldn't distract from the material being presented.
* It feels odd with the commercial breaks.
* OK, there's the usual bit on Giordano Bruno. They are still misrepresenting him, but at least they are giving more info on his life. He wasn't jailed and executed solely for his astronomical views; the guy was a loud and obnoxious critic of the Roman church  who wouldn't shut up.
Quote
"The single motive of everything we have discovered Bruno doing was the destruction of the Papacy and all its works" - John Bossy, Giordano Bruno and the Embassy Affair, Yale University Press, 1991, p. 146
* I cannot remember the last time a major broadcast network aired any science show at all. On public TV, yes, but not one of the big networks.
* I really, really, really hope that the show succeeds in the ratings.

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow...

I hope so too. Also, I hope that people who are proud of their scientific ignorance don't take to Twitter to start talking about this show --

I was really looking forward to this show, and I had seen Dr. Tyson on "Ancient Aliens" before, but didn't know his background.  Then, I realized it was on Fox, so I'm boycotting it, and will wait for it on Netflix.  A real shame.    :'(

Watch it on FOX, for cryin' out loud.

You think you're going to find something this good on The Learning Channel (home of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo") or the Discovery Channel (home of "Amish Mafia")?

I understand your reason for boycotting Fox...so watch it on the National Geographic Channel instead.

And remember, Fox O&Os aren't the same as Faux News Channel...and this show is being shown in primetime on your local Fox O&O.

Don't deny yourself of the joy of science because of a technicality :)

I liked in the first few minutes of the show he explained how science works.

Basically: Observe, measure, retest.  If it doesn't work, and you cannot get a consistent measurable result, throw it out and try something new.

No, I must've been mistaken.  I watch a lot of science documentaries, but have a difficult time remembering their names.  He probably wasn't on "A.A."

I'm glad someone understands my animosity towards Fox; I was sure many here agreed, but for different reasons, of course.  I just don't watch TV, but Cable, instead.  In fact, in the 14 years I've been in the civilian world, I've only dedicated to TWO primetime TV shows: "Last Resort" with Andre Braugher (only had 1 season), and "Revolutions" (first season only, lost interest to continue).

Since I have Charter for cable, they have OnDemand, and they're already showing the pilot episode, may watch it tonight.  The only commercials are for other Fox TV shows, not local news or advertising.

His story is fascinating. His father died of lung cancer when Tyson was very young, despite efforts by the family to get him to stop smoking. As a chi1d Tyson became obsessed with building a time machine that would take him back to his father's youth to stop him from starting to smoke. He soon discovered that he couldn't talk about it because peers think you're crazy, so he quit talking about it. He took all the science courses he could, got a BS in physics, went on to get a Ph.D. in physics, and became the leading U.S. expert on time and its physical properties. In the course of that he developed the math that proved that no time-travel device can go to a point in time prior to the building of the device.

He told the story at a meeting of the APA in the 1990s. He's cool.

I'm not sure where you got this from gOOb, but if this is what the ID's are trying to use to disprove what the real scientists (and in case they didn't know, not all of them are atheists or even agnostics) have theorized, then they *REALLY NEED* to take another look at most of their "facts" ( ::)) in that hypothesis of their's. :-\

Personally, I think Tyson is the BEST replacement available for Carl. I agree, whole heartedly, that no one could ever replace him, but at least Neil knew him, learned from him, and admired him.

The thing that I like most about the new Cosmos is that Tyson is so completely genuine. Like Carl, when he talks about the age of the universe, the number of stars in the sky, or the scientific method itself - he feels it. Through and through. And yeah, maybe he's just acting, but it's a damned convincing act, if so.

The joy of knowledge is contagious. When someone truly embraces learning - not WHAT they learn, but the actual process of learning - then the people around them can't really help but get caught up in the enthusiasm.

And we so desperately need some enthusiasm towards science...

Love space stuff. NdGT is a great host. You know what really bothered me about this show? It was when he went into the asteroid belt and the graphics made it seem like the fun Star Wars version of an asteroid field. In the real asteroid belt the asteroids are very distant from each other. Science channel has good space shows too.
