PM / AM and 24:00 hour format
« on: April 02, 2014, 09:26:39 AM »
What does 12:11:00 PM mean?
11 minutes past midnight or 11 minutes past high noon?

I'm confused.
Anti-social behaviours lack consideration for the well-being of others. Any types of conduct that violates basic rights (human rights is one of them) of another person. It can show as covert or overt hostility.

postmeridian - after noon
antemeridian - before noon
....rejoicing in the fullness thereof....

Thanks Goober.
So 12:11 PM is 11 minutes past high noon.
And 12:11 AM is 11 minutes past mid night.

So there is no 00:11 AM or PM. It is always 12:11 AM or PM.

As I understand, there is 00:11 on the 24 hour clock which is 11 minutes past midnight. 12:11 is 11 minutes past noon. Somebody correct me if I`m wrong.

This is definetly correct. I'm living with this for over 40 years now ;-)

12:11 is 11 minutes past noon. Somebody correct me if I`m wrong.

And this was my problem to understand 12:11 PM. What is it? In the night or at noon.  :'(

This little thread confirms an observation of mine being involved in the hospitality business. Most of the world now uses what Americans call " Military time " precisely because it is much less confusing. Andrat2000 is a german and so the confusion is understandable since Europeans use, especially those under 50 years of age, military time. If I say 0300 hours, or just 0300, it means 3 AM. If I say 1500 hours, it means 3PM. 12 AM is 2400 hours and 12:01 AM is 0001 hours. Military time ( AKA as NATO time ) is superior to the traditional because there is no AM or PM confusion. Like the Metric system it is more logical and precise than the old English system. Which of course it means we Americans won't use it because we can be pigheaded about certain stuff just for the helluva it.  ;D

Pedonbio agrees with me ?  :o Oh shit, the world is ending !!  :'(  I guess a 10 mile wide meteorite will strike the Earth soon.  ;) ;D Even though in reality the USA in actuality uses both simultaneously. You buy drugs in grams, not ounzes for example. GM no longer sells a 350 cubic inch small block Chevy engine, it is now a 5.7 liter engine. And the bolts holding it together use milimeters, not 1/4 inch. So Americans do use the Metric system but not exclusively. We are a hybrid nation in that respect.

It is a system we inherited from the old colonial power, Britain.

That's no excuse :P, most british colonies (and even the UK itself) prefer metric system over imperial units . In fact I'd call the UK more hybridized (imperial to metric) than the US.

I approve of this thread :P
I don't really mind imperial being less intuitive than metric, it's just a hassle to have to deal with two completely different systems.

And even if the UK now uses metric system, they still use "ye olde" measurements like stone for peoples weight.

I would quibble with the "intuitive" description of the metric system; quite the opposite, it is entirely rational. The imperial system was much more intuitive--A "foot" was just that in length; a "tablespoon" was just that, which made two tablespoons an "ounce"; four ounces made a "gill", which was half a "cup"; two cups were a "pint", which weighed a "pound", and so on. Through a complex set of interrelationships, it was truly intuitive.

ALL measurements, standards, units, etc, etc, including the metric, are arbitrary. What is a Meter after all ? Well, what I remember from school in Mexico, the Meter is derived from one 10th millionth of the distance between the equator and the north pole. Because the earth IS NOT perfectly round, if the measurement had been from the equator to the south pole, it would have been slightly different. The Kilo was arbitrary also. Dividing or multiplying by 10 is what makes the system more rational and simpler. One of the few things the French have done right in the last 200 years. But then the entire world still use in navigation standards from antiquity. Why is a circle divided in 360 degrees ? Well, the greeks and the Phoenicians used it that way. Astronomers use AUs for distance. That's the size of our solar system. What if they had used some other standard ? So the US still uses for everyday life a standard which evolved in the middles ages in Britain and we don't go along with the rest of the world. So what ?  Big deal. As long as we don't forcibly impose it on the rest of the world, so what ? Besides, as  I stated earlier, our scientists, engineers and manufacturers have changed to metric in order to export or negotiate with the rest of the world and Americans use the metric system a lot more than they realize or outsiders give us credit.
