World Cup (Football/Soccer) 2014
« on: June 12, 2014, 12:55:14 PM »
Well, it is that time again when 32 nations battle it out for the Football World Cup, hosted on this occasion in Brazil.

Tonight we see the first game, the hosts Brazil playing Croatia. Should be a decent game.

IMHO, should be a great game.   :o

But I love the U.S. coach's observation that were gonna get our butts kicked. Truth in sport? Mein Gott!

The good news: all the goals were scored by Brazil.

The bad news: the score was 3-1. :)

Yes indeed, the first match finished 3-1 to Brazil. Croatia scored first courtesy of an Own-Goal by Marcelo. This was cancelled out by Neymar to make the score 1-1, then controversially, the softest of penalties was given and Neymar put it past the Croatian keeper to lead 2-1, keeper was unlucky, he got his hands to it. The penalty itself was a joke! The Brazilian player got no worse than a tap on the shoulder but went down as if shot! His hands went up looking for the penalty before he even hit the ground.   Brazil however scored a third courtesy of Oscar, to put the match beyond any doubt. The third goal came after a promising Croatia move was snuffed out. There was further controversy when earlier Neymar was given a yellow card when it should have been red (he raised his arm and smacked Modric in the face), and the worst part, Neymar score a minute later.

Ridiculous, the biggest footballing showcase is being made a laughing stock by inept officials (not for the first time either).

Anyway, to the victor go the spoils.

Well Mexico managed a 1-0 victory over African nation Cameroon. Should have been 3-0, the Mexicans had 2 goals disallowed by a linesman who I can only assume was texting his mum at the time the goals went in and put up his flag by accident.

Biggest shock so far is the 5-1 demolition of Spain by the Netherlands. The holders were hopelessly outclassed by the Dutch.

They're playing for Shara.  :o  They figured 5-1 was okay for an opening match. In future they will do better.

I think we can all agree that these are men, and men are technically people, so we should afford them the respect they deserve as the complex, reasoning beings that they are while we watch them kick a ball around a field and occasionally get undressed after goals.  However, there will always be some people who perpetuate ass-pinching culture and I support offering extra security details to escort these men to their cars after night games.  ;)

So, Spain are OUT, defending champions fallen at the first hurdle for the second World Cup running (Italy, winners in 2006 went out in the group stages in 2010).

Sadly, England look to be going out after a 2-1 defeat by Uruguay. Unless Italy win both matches against Costa Rica and Uruguay convincingly, and England hammer Costa Rica, Roy's boys are going home.

Spain loses, and the king abdicates.

There is a certain good quality about that.
