Despite the funny pictures of dinosaurs turning into oil, most (if not all) petroleum deposits now used for energy were sequestered long before in the Carboniferous Era and has been out of circulation for 230 million plus years before we started spreading it across the sky. I agree that the algae-recycling of carbon would be a vast improvement. But, as I mentioned above, now we are talking about mitigation, not preservation.
