For those interested in the math -

Here is the breakdown of the formula used for the Bq calculation and within it the Bp value.
The subject values needed are;

1)   height and weight for the BMI calculations
2)   bra size in band and cup, e.g. 34C

•   Note: Subject’s BMI values were based on the metric equation for BMI using kg and m.
•   Note: Cup size follows the EU system with no double letters, e.g. D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, etc.

Step One: Calculating Bra Size Steps off of Base Size of 32A:

This assumes that breast tissue is approximately the same density, even though there is a range it has been found to be negligible when considering a wide range of women. Only in very homogeneous populations would a specific density be suggested for greater accuracy.
Normally manufactured bras are based off a standard size progression off of a 32A, with each additional cup or band above that base adding an additional 0.847in to a 9.7in cup diameter. This makes a 34B the same volume as a 32C or a 36A as they are the same increase beyond 32B – these are all sister sizes.
a)   Convert the cup size to an integer 1, 2, 3, etc. and get the jumps away from A (value 1), A cups are thus are 0 steps, B=1, C=2, etc. This is cup size delta.
b)   Determine the band size jumps from 32in, this can be a negative number. A 36in band would be +2, a 30in band would be -1. This is band size delta.
c)   Sum the cup jumps + band jumps to get the total bra size jumps from a 32A. This can be negative - Such as a 30A cup would be 0 cups + (-1bands) = -1 total jumps. This is total bra delta.
d)   Get the radius in cm of the subject’s bra cup with the formula {(total jumps)*0.847cm} +9.7cm = cup diameter.

Step Two: Determine Bra Size to Volume and from that Determine Breast Weight:

Cup diameter in cm = (((cup size jumps beyond A + band size jumps beyond 32in)*0.847)+9.7)
Cd = (∆cup+∆band)*0.847cm + 9.7cm

•   Thus a 32A bra has a diameter of 9.7cm as this would be (0+0)*0.847cm + 9.7cm = 9.7cm.
•   Thus a 38D bra has a (2+3)*0.847cm+9.7cm = 13.935cm.
With the cup diameter (Cd) the volume of the cup (Cv) is easy:
Cup volume (Cv) = Cup diameter^3 *3.14159/12.     This can be written as Cv = Cd^3*π/12

•   Thus a 36D bra has a Cv of 13.935^3*π/12 = 708.4173cm^3
•   The volume of the whole bra would be twice that or Cv * 2 assuming mostly symmetric breasts.
Total breast weight is then Cv/1000*1.8 which is the kg per cm^3 weight
Breast Weight (Bw) kg = Cv/1000*1.8
•   Thus a 36D bra is designed to hold 2.56kg of total breast
•   1.8 kg/l is the result of the average density of breasts 0.9 kg/l times 2 breasts

These same values are confirmed by using the bra sizing wiki chart and a simple check shows that the formula produces results that match the chart.
It should be noted that in one of the referenced studies the team actually calculated the average density of breasts at 1.017 kg/l – however this was using average values for 1980, which were much smaller in terms of breast volume and were, at the time, noted by the team as being at the low end of the estimate of non-fat tissue. Therefore, the common 0.9 kg/l is still used here as it not only matches back to the standard bra size chart weights & volumes but also corresponds to a shift to greater average breast volumes.

Step Three: Calculating % of Breast Weight to Body Weight or Bp Value:

This is very simple - % Bust = Breast weight / Body weight
•   Thus a 34D on a 120lb body = 2.12kg / (120/2.20462) where 2.20462 = lbs/kg (converts lb to kg).
•   This would be 2.12kg / (120/2.20462) = 3.895 %

This value is the Bust percentage (Bp) value which appears as the vertical placement on the charts.
Bp = Bw / Body weight in kg
This Bp is very interesting as many studies have either implied or observed that there are two groups of women; using the star chart analogy, the “Mainline” and “Super-Busty”. The majority of women clump around the 4% Bp +/- 1% and another smaller but distinct group clump around 8.75% Bp +/- 1.25%. This is not to say there are no individuals as say, 7.25% or 2.75% or at 10.75% but they are rarer. This is regardless of overall build, which is surprising.

•   From research and my own samples sets the average Mainline clump averages at around 3.8% for North America and 3.3% for the world.
•   Although not specifically researched the Super-Busty clump appears to average just above 8%.
•   Several bra size charts show a smaller but distinct spike in the upper cups which may be an expression of this Super-Busty group – they appear to make up under 2.5% of all women or about 1:40 given the results from studies.

Step 4: Generating the “Breast Quotient” or Bq value.

This is the “score” that any particular set would have and is set up to show a relativistic size value based of the average of the whole population. It is also based on BMI which itself is an aggregated system. It should be noted that BMI is generally criticized for not taking into account body leanness / body proportions so as to produce ABOVE actual values for people who are just more muscular or short and BELOW actual values for tall people. The estimate is that the upper and lower 10% of these body types are given increasingly erroneous values.
This actually works in the favor of the following formula as it compensates for the body-type extremes. So the built-in quirks of the BMI are actually a benefit in how they are used here.

a)   Determine the percent difference between the subject’s Bp and general population’s Bp.
b)   The general population’s Bp has been shown to hover around 3.3% or 3.8% for the USA.
c)   As I stated earlier I have used 3.3% as the worldwide average Bp.
•   Thus the % shift of the subject Bp = Bp/3.3
•   This can be considered as the ∆Bp = Bp/3.3
•   Thus a subject with a 34D and 120lbs is 3.895% breast weight / 3.3% = ∆Bp of 118.03
One can see that if the USA standard of 3.8 is used the ∆Bp will be smaller. For specific countries that are known for busty women, such as the UK, a value above 4.0 would be expected.
•   Ironically the Bp value average population denominator happens to sit very close to the integer equivalent value for the average cup size for a country. This is purely coincidental, but an interesting rule-of-thumb.

d)   Determine the subject’s BMI using the metric formula = weight kg / height m ^2
e)   Determine the percent difference between the subject’s BMI and the population’s average.
f)   For these calculations a world average BMI of 23 was used.
•   Thus the % shift of the subject BMI = Subject BMI / 23
•   This can be considered as the ∆BMI = Subject BMI/23

One can see that if the USA standard BMI of 28.5 vs. 23 is used the ∆BMI will be smaller. However, if the USA standard is used for the ∆BMI then the standard for ∆Bp should be used and this is a ratio of 115/123 and will result in a reduction of the final Bq score by 92.93%. This is because the USA has bustier and higher BMI levels and any individual would be compared to bustier and larger women.

•   Thus a same subject with a BMI of 18.83 / 23 has a ∆BMI = 81.9%

Final Step: To generate the subject’s Bq score just get the ratio of the ∆Bp% / ∆BMI% then rounded.

As has been shown this will produce a number (you can drop the %’s) that is a percentage ratio from average for both the breast mass to body mass and the average of the body mass to the general population’s body mass.

•   Thus our same subject has a Bq = 118.03 / 0.819 = 144 (rounded) or 144.1 actual

Summation:

Thus a subject who we know to have 34D, 5ft 7in, and 120lbs has a Bp = 3.895 and Bq = 144.
This would place them in the Average Mainline zone, “Chesty” group with breasts that are just below the “VERY LARGE” cut-off Bq of 150. This means that depending on clothing, pose, weight fluctuations, they could be considered very large or large at times. Their Bp is also as expected hovering just below 4% and very close to mainline average.

The Full Formula:

Writing out the entire formula as text for clarity it looks like this;
Breast Quotient (Bq) = {[(((cups steps above A + band steps above 32in) * 0.847cm + 9.7cm) ^3 * π / 12) / 1000 * 1.8 kg/L ] / Body weight kg } / 3.3 / {[Body weight kg/height m^2] / 23}
Where 1.8 kg/l = 0.9 kg/l *2, and 3.3% and 23 are world averages.

Building the formula up from the root equation yields:
Bq = ∆Bp/∆BMI
Bq = (Bp/3.3)/∆BMI
Bq = (Bw/Body weight/3.3)/∆BMI
Bq = (Cv/1000*1.8/Body weight/3.3)/∆BMI
Bq = ((Cd^3*π/12/1000*1.8 )/Body weight/3.3)/∆BMI
Bq = (((∆cup+∆band)*0.847cm + 9.7cm)^3*π/12/1000*1.8/Body weight/3.3)/∆BMI
Bq = (((∆cup+∆band)*0.847cm + 9.7cm)^3*π/12/1000*1.8/Body weight/3.3)/(Subject BMI/23)
Bq = (((∆cup+∆band)*0.847cm + 9.7cm)^3*π/12/1000*1.8/Weight/3.3)/(Weight kg/Height m^2)/23

The formula only needs; body weight (W), height (H) and bra size (Cup and Band, C & B)
Note: The increase in weight from ever larger breasts is included in the body weight and BMI values. Therefore, subjects with known implants are assumed to be including the implant weight in their overall body weight unless this is stated otherwise. If so, the total body weight must be used including implant weight.
The charts graph Bp (y) and Bq (x), with Bp as a logarithmic scale (base 2)

I have attached a graphic outlining one of the best research reports on this topic.

Many of the results were duplicated when I set up the Bq equation. The most interesting results that aligned with this report included;

1) In my sample group of 40 and the study 45 there were 1 and 2 results each in what I have called the super-busty range. In this study they were dismissed, in my continued digging I suggest that these were examples of the 1 in 40 who fit this upper sub-spike population.

2) Contrary to expectation, increasing weight does not correspond to increasing breast size. There is little correlation between higher BMI and larger bra sizes. I confirmed this with the Bq to BMI comparison (Fig 9b). Interestingly, the lower third in BMI of the study actually had a higher correlation (.57) than the middle at (.34) and the upper BMI range at (.22).

3) This study placed an upper limit from their test at 4.4% and ignored the 10.3% and 7.4% - In my sample the maximum of the main group was 4.34% and one at 7.94%.

I have included some data from the UK and Norway showing the typical distributions of bra sizes. They all suggest there is a sub-spike around 5 cups above the common C-D primary spike. The UK charts are broken down over band sizes. Not every band has a smooth bell curve, but most have have sub-spike where we expect it.

One should note that at small bands and very large bands the distribution of cups gets very atypical.
The most common cup size for 28 bands was a G cup! For bands above 38 a FF or G cups tend to dominate and this is on a British size range.

Other studies have shown this when they consider cup sizes above F.

Note: As expected the very highest Bq scores are all for augmented women in the Hyper-Busty cluster and are therefore not indicative of "real" busts. The highest natural Bq scores belong to a few extremely rare body types in the underweight + mainline Super-Busty conglomeration that occurs at Bq > 300.

Note: Bq does not show % of body that is breast which cluster around 4% and 9%.

Due to the unrelated nature of breast size to body BMI or degree of obesity, there is a counter-intuitive effect that breasts of similar Bq score will have a more similar nature even on women that have the same bra size. In other words, subjects with similar Bq scores may have different size breasts but they will be of a similar overall proportionality and nature.

That is why women tend to cluster into the stereotypical body labels regardless of actual sizes and weights. This aspect was noted in Figure 8 above.

Special Note:
To try and squelch some possible consternation regarding the very upper rage of the Hyper-Busty group here are the claims to fame so that nobody feels like their favorite augmented gal has been slighted.

Chelsea Charms Bq= 673 has the greatest % breast to body mass at 31.608%.
Norma Stitz Bq= 367 is a close second at 29.592% but is coming in with much more body mass - however she is natural.
Beshine Bq= 739 scored above Chelsea but has a smaller bust % at 29.674% a bit above Norma.
Mistress Rhiannon Bq= 768 edges above Beshine who is a mainline build, Rhiannon is underweight but only 20.81% tatas.
Maxi Mounds Bq= 790 and 24.554% breasts scored above Chelsea, Beshine, and Rhiannon and would have been top...
except for the BEA's very own...
Keisha Evans Bq= 803 who just edged out Maxi due to a slightly leaner body and being 26.19% boob.

Who is the highest natural score for some of the base body types not mentioned so far?
Elaina Gregory at Bq=405 - Overweight
Milena Velba at Bq=345 - (Mainline) Curvy
Toni Francis at Bq=415 - (Mainline) Regular
Hitomi Tanaka at Bq=426 - Slight

I really dislike any formula that even tangentially references the BMI because the BMI is so bogus.

Other than that, it's interesting how this particular formula is shaping up. Would like to see where Abbi Secraa, Sexy Venera, Maserati, Duana/Agnetis, Dakini, Milena Velba, Nadine Jansen, Miosotis, and Leanne Crow rate.

I am well aware of the shortcomings of the BMI calculation. However, the very aspects of the BMI - that it over-estimates for very tall or muscular and under-estimates for very short or slight people actually works in the way it is used. Acting in the denominator BMI ratio this trend to exaggerate at the two extremes of build compensates for those who are busty simply because they are short or stocky and rewards those to have breast mass while still being tall or slight.

This is not just an arbitrary bias. There is a biologic basis for this.

On smaller women it takes less breast mass to attain the same cup size than on larger women.
Early onset of breast growth slows height gain.
Stocky women benefit from both these aspects making them appear larger.
Increasing fat levels, especially at above average BMI's, have an insignificant contribution to breast size.
Very high BMI's actually have a negative effect on breast size.
Tall woman require more chest mass to reach the same bra size.
Muscular women (yielding high BMI) lose breast mass unlike the non-existence to gains from obesity.

Collectively this means:
Short, stocky (Higher BMI), busty women are most penalized.
Short, slight (Lower BMI), busty women are treated neutrally.
Medium, stocky (Higher BMI), busty women are slightly penalized.
Medium, slight (Lower BMI), busty women slightly rewarded.
Tall, stocky (Higher BMI), busty women are treated neutrally.
Tall, slight (Lower BMI), busty women are most rewarded.

This is in keeping with the studies that show that BMI (a whole body mass calculation) and breast mass are actually unrelated. The common percent of body mass that is breasts is surprisingly consistent.
Thus, only women who exhibit a breast size (bra size) body percentage that is counter to their build BMI ratio yield a higher quotient score. The very oddities of the BMI are used to compensate for proportional "boost" that short/small/stocky women only appear to have.

Bq for the list above:
Abbi Secraa = insufficient trustworthy data
Sexy Venera = 249 (7.0%)
Maserati = 281 (9.9%)
Duana/Agnetis = already given 406 (11.4%)
Dakini = insufficient data
Milena Velba = already given 345 (10.5%)
Nadine Jansen = already given 181 (6.9%)
Miosotis = insufficient trustworthy data
Leanne Crow = already given 301 (11.2%)

There have been some questions from others regarding particular relationships on the chart.
This is a very good way the discuss what the charts are actually showing...

Remember this is Bust Rating and not Bust Ranking.

To keep this simple I will paraphrase the two recent questions that have be raised. Both will let us review what the charts show. For fun I will give these two questions fun titles;

Question 1 - A Penny for Your Thoughts
How is it that the chart makes it look like you believe Penny Brown's breasts to be larger than the breasts of Anorei Collins?  I don't think that is what you believe, but the size of the bubble plots on the scatter chart appear to indicate that.
Contributed by bignatslover

Good question. I should start by saying that the accuracy of the chart is based on the validity of the data that I have been able to glean. In this regard I try very hard to get the best and most verifiable data. It has already been pointed out that some women just fabricate their statistics, others just fib a little, where as some have very well documented figures.

As I mention above, some people just do not have values that can be confirmed or are highly disputed. I just can not use them in the charts unless more substantiated numbers can be provided. I also have only used "recent" numbers for women, so we are talking about only in the last year or so...

With this prompt I have again tried to get the best data for Penny - this has been adjusted based off direct information provided by the model. This reduced her band size by 5 and increased her cup by 1.

Having said this here are the most trusted numbers and most current ones I could get for these two women:
Anorei Collins - height 5'-6", weight 285 lbs, bra 38 O cup
Penny Brown - height 5'-10", weight 295 lbs, bra 38 O cup

(in both cases this is recently from the models themselves)
Penny has recently stated that she is sized to O cup, however she wares K or L for comfort
Her bust size is 54" and O cup is 15" less or 39, she tends to undersize to use a band of 38
My supposition is that she wares a 46K or 44L around the house*

Thus this is how their numbers work out in the Bp (bust percentage) and Bq rates:
Anorei Collins - Bp = 10.2%, Bq = 155, BMI = 45.8, calculated Breast Volume = 3664 cc - natural
Penny Brown - Bp = 9.8%, Bq = 163, BMI = 42.2, calculated Breast Volume = 3664 cc - augmented

Penny Brown being augmented throws the comparison a bit off, however when you add her original natural size plus the reported implant volume one gets a total very close to the calculated result above (1200cc + 2530cc = 3730cc). This sort of cross confirmation helps to tie reported values together. Anorei is a solid BBW and super busty and the fact that her breasts are still over 10% of her body mass points to how impressively large she is and all natural to boot!

The relative size of the chart bubbles are based on the calculated cc of the breast and only roughly correspond to chart location. There are some bubbles that are larger than bubbles with higher Bq scores. Anorei and Penny are very close in proportional size.

Question 2 - The Christina Conundrum
That chart makes it out so the average woman is bustier than Christina Hendricks. I do not need to be good at math to know that is not reality or is it?
Contributed by codydeveraux

Great question! I knew that some people would notice this, that is why I left Christina in there. To respond lets first remember two critical things about charting women here:

A) The values are the most recent and best confirmed physical stats for the subject. In many cases this takes some digging and stopping to really think about it. If I can get the stats directly from the women, as in an interview, quote, doctor report, etc. all the better. So using 10 year old data from some random **29** site is not the best.

B) Women change over time. As was demonstrated above, the typical woman follows a common curve with an initial curve up toward average then a rapid expansion to their most busty around the 4% mainline cluster then a fishhook stabilization as they take on their full mature proportions.

Christina Hendricks has a very muddled bust size history and there is rampant speculation as to her actual and proper size. I attempted to find the most verifiable sources and in nearly every case this was from Christina herself.
The Average Woman is actually very easy to establish medically and is not in question.

Here are the most trusted numbers and most current ones I could get for these two subjects:
Average Woman - height 5'-4", weight 146 lbs, bra 34 E cup
Christina Hendricks - height 5'-8", weight 154 lbs, bra 32 F cup

(CH has had wide weight and bra size changes and numerous reported values, these were the most recent using her own comments)
There is even some speculation that she may have had cosmetic surgery - however this is debated.
The current average woman in the USA actually has a bust to band difference of 4.6", thus a small E cup.

This is how their numbers work out in the Bp (bust percentage) and Bq rates:
Average Woman - Bp = 3.86%, Bq = 108, BMI = 24.9, calculated Breast Volume = 708 cc - natural
Christina Hendricks - Bp = 3.66%, Bq = 109, BMI = 23.3, calculated Breast Volume = 708 cc

C) Christina Hendricks has been noted as large as 32H and as small as 32D. She has also been tagged as 36F, 32G, 32H, 34E, and 34F as well as variations within this range. Her weight has also been logged in as high as 169 and as low as 115. She has been in the public eye since her late teens. Even her height has been listed at 5'-7", 5'-7 1/2", and 5'-8" during her adult life. She is 40 years old with a D.O.B. of May 3rd, 1975. Needless to say, the trick is to find decent concurrent records of her stats at any one point. This is not so easy.

Her most recent statistics were taken from a very recent interview where she stated that she had lost a cup (from 32G to 32F) along with the 15 lbs. taking her down from a high of 169 lbs. with her height as a constant, it was simple to reach her Bp and Bq values.

The attached chart shows CH's changes over time at points where all values, height, weight, and bra size could be substantiated beyond just idle speculation.

Things to note:
You can see the typical fishhook progression from her early twenties to today.
She has progressed like a typical mainline woman - settling around the common 4% bust mass.
CH is renowned for conspicuously wearing the wrong sized bra.
At no time has she ever exceeded a Bp of 4.93%, even with the largest assumed bra sizes. (using her own comments is better)
She has a narrow torso 32 band at most, with large breasts, on a sturdy curvy body.
Christina just happens to have vacillated near to the average woman.

Remember this is Bust Rating and not Bust Ranking.

* This fits, as for reference Kithara wares similar up-size bands (46J) around the house for comfort.

Wow Nimrod, that's a ton of work, so first off let me say I do appreciate the effort put in. Thanks! Can you actually get this published (maybe a review article of sorts)?  ;D I'll readily admit to just liking to ogle :P, but I appreciate the science behind it and how it somewhat explains why certain models who aren't really that big, elicit a strong reaction by virtue of having a great figure.

I have a few queries though.
Anorei Collins at 38 O seems reasonable to me, as she isn't that thin.
Penny Brown at 48 N, I find that hard to swallow after looking at her pictures. I'm thinking 48 might actually be the fullest measurement around the bust rather than the band size.

I also do feel Christina Hendricks looks quite a bit bustier to me than any average woman I know. Yes officially she's an F (I checked it too) but somehow she seems a lot larger than that. You cited 32H as well so how about using that for starters.

Thanks again for doing this.

P/S - I'm vexq, btw, in case you're wondering. Didn't quite manage to get my old account back.

Thanks for the compliment.

After your prompt I went digging even deeper for the most accurate data on Penny and found it, directly from her mouth. (videos, blogs) Anyway she will put on higher bands + smaller cups for comfort but is sized to 36/38 O cup depending on how the math is worked. In this case, I made sure that source material was actually from Penny or her own sites, for accuracy. I am using the 38 O as this corresponds to her fullest bust dimension of 54" minus the 15" to reach a band of 38 and a cup size of O -and- it is one of the cup sizes she directly states.

Christina is becoming a nuisance because so many people will point to some image of her in a low cut overly tight dress in a bra way too small pressing her bosom to the ceiling. Do not use photographs to argue size. She is notorious for squeezing into the wrong sizes. She has a large chest, yes. But her chest makes up the expected percentage of her body mass and when you tend to weigh in around 160 lbs that makes for a decent rack. Her look is mostly packaging.

I have no problem using 32H for Christina, because I already have on the chart above. Just look at the data points called out as CH27, CH30 and CH36 this is when she had a cup size reported as equal to 32H. Data point CH36 is the largest at the lightest weight and yields a Bq = 138 and Bp = 4.93% at a weight of 161 lbs. This places her on the very edge of very large percentage and very large rating - solidly a large/very large chest designation.

I must say that the deeper I dig into Christina's figure changes the more I wonder if she has had some manner of work done. I feel it is subtle, but her figure history does have a bit of a jump around age 30 just prior to her landing her most famous role on Mad Men. I did not even know there was some controversy until looking into her past. I really do not know.

Below I have added a detail correction to chart 12 showing Penny's new location.
This places her right in the the Super-Busty Zaftig group in the upper tier sizes as one would expect.
I have included reference color circles for others in this group for comparison:
Penny has the greatest diameter due to her retaining a similar cup and band to Anorei - but over a larger frame.
Anorei is right behind Penny simply in a more compact frame and moving toward SBBW.
Kithara sits right in this cluster while being just a bit smaller of bust overall but doing so with much less weight.
and Ms. Cali is just a bit smaller, but still impressive, while sitting closer to the edge of SBBW

One of the original inspirations that motivated the current Bust Rating diagram.

I like that not only is the calculation very simple, it uses readily available physical attributes and holds up under review using a wide range of subjects.
