Favourite lines from TV Comedies
« on: October 27, 2015, 12:57:23 PM »
I love watching comedy shows, at the moment I am working through 'The Thick of It' a political satire set during the last Labour UK Government. It is full of lots of sweary one-liners usually dished out by Peter Capaldi's character, the irrepressible spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker.

However, one of my favourite shows of recent years is 'Rules of Engagement' which features an impressive ensemble cast.

In one episode Adam, the dimwitted one is being told by his friend Jeff's wife about a trip to Oahu, to which he replies 'Er, I think it is pronounced Ohio' to which she replies 'It's in Hawaii', so he turns to his other friend Russell and says behind his hand 'Someone get her a map' in a sing-song voice.

OK maybe not best example from that show, but I do remember that line over a lot of others!

I'll post some 'The Thick of It' lines sometime, there are some truly classic insults in that show.

"About 50 yards," from The Games, my all-time favorite sit-com.

It's from Australia, and was about preparation for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It's absolutely brilliant -- (except for one episode which is now dated) -- and hard to find. I discovered it on public television.  Any Kiwi and Australian BEA members will likely know of its creator and star, John Clarke.

Its Aussie network has released two seasons on DVD, but only the first in NTSC format.

The joke is that a contractor who laid out the track erred, and it's too short. The organizers keep pressing him, and he keeps agreeing, saying the track is "about 50 yards." (I likely have the length wrong. Anyway, you had to have seen it. It's all very dead-pan.)

In Red Dwarf there is an episode where the Mechanoid, Kryten is being interviewed by the ships psychiatric councillor. He talks about developing rudimentary emotions, one of which is ambivalence. He then goes on to pull a gurning face before explaining...

'As you can see, I haven't quite mastered that one yet. I look like a dog with a caramel toffee.'

I love the IT Crowd, too many funny lines to mention...

Red Dwarf again, a conversation about Jesus.

Kryten: With respect sir, you think Jesus was a hippie.

Rimmer: Well, he was. He had long hair and he didn't have a job. What more do you want?

More Red Dwarf...

Rimmer: Step up to Red Alert!
Kryten: Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb.
Rimmer: There's always some excuse, isn't there?!
