I could easily look at the site from work if I wanted to, since it's just text. But now there's that big splash screen there, nope, can't look at that safely!
Yup, one of my gripes too.

Well, that rules out banners as a solution...

While I imagine most people would prefer little more than a 'warning adult content' splash (myself included), to any admins I think the core of what people are most concerned about, and would most value in a compromise, is the following:

1. A way to at least show some content to visitors. This serves a few functions: letting them know the UBEA's not dead if they're linked to episodes, allowing authors to share their work more widely and keeping the site attractive to potential new authors, which in most imagined compromises where you need an account to post is potential new accounts.

At the very, very, very[/i] least - so least I don't even consider it a compromise - we need a 'create a free account to get access to the Unending Breast Expansion Addventure' message on the login prompt, so people finding i from links or google don't assume the site is dead or paywalled, as I've read some have.

Point 1 is the most important, but I imagine regular users would also value...

2. Being able to quickly and easily access recent episodes from multiple devices. I know I used to check in a lot more often before having to login. Checking the recents for follow-ups to or comments on your episodes, checking what's new to be thinking about following, leaving quick comments - all this little stuff that makes the community feel like a community, people are less likely to bother with if they'll have to log in multiple times each day across different devices. And given the nature of the site, the 'people can log in once and they'll stay logged in' argument doesn't really work when many people will be using private browsing.

-Another take - for regular users, at least being able to see what's been posted easily is important. If no storylines you're part of or following have updated that day, or no titles grab your interest, then there's no reason to go to the hassle of logging in. It can be frustrating to wait all day for your one login only to discover this, rather than being able to check in in under a minute multiple times a day and make a note to log in later as something interesting has come up.

The recents and comments being the heart of the community, much more than the forums, is why all my compormise ideas in my last post focus on leaving some form of it in tact. Ultimately though, that's probably less important than new visitors being able to see something, as they aren't going to decide to make an account based on nothing.

Make it possible to read the Addventure without having to sign in. Some of it, at least. Perhaps make episodes readable to anyone, but hide their options, or something.

This is another good compromise idea, particularly if it's made possible for google to search the addventure without being logged in again. A modification on this might be that users can see the options, and which are starred (taken). This would give a sense of where the story does or could go, but if not logged in the links would be either plain black text like the body text, or every link just leads to the login screen.

This way, visitors can still discover the content here by searching for certain fetishes or phrases, or being linked to good episode that'll appeal to them from elsewhere, but still have motivation to sign up (inconvenience). While it would technically be possible for someone to read a whole long thread this way with direct links to every episode, the effort on both the poster's and the reader's part to copy/paste or click through from another tab every single link in a chain that could be dozens long would hopefully motivate people to get accounts. But that's the thing, people are at least able to share something to motivate this.

I'm also not a fan of having to log-in twice if you don't go straight to old.bearchive.com/~addventure - I've been asked to log in to the main site, then asked to log in again when I click the Unending BE Addventure tab at the top.

I did suggest that to Botcomics.  He told me he tried to modify the login screen but was unable to, and would have to refer that to the developers.  So maybe that will change.

Well, it would be possible to make a minimally intrusive header ad that lacks any overt sexual content. There are no competing advertisements on the Addventure and the simplicity of the design means that even a highly passive advertisement would be very effective. There is simply no need to try and actively grab a user's attention by means of audacious images and animations, particularly given that the Archive has a complete monopoly on the ad space and doesn't have to pay for its use.

That being said, a header would still be a sub-optimal solution. When a user clicks on an episode they do so with the intention of reading the content, so a header would most likely be ignored or possibly even regarded as an unwelcome intrusion. Better placement would be to place the advertisement at the very bottom, alongside all of the other meta-data, which also means that the episode itself functionally acts as an advertisement as it primes the user into enjoying themselves before offering the context of the greater BE Archive. It would be fairly ideal as far as solutions go.

I am curious, who was it that thought a bastardization of Tumblr/Flickr/Pintrest for a gallery was a good idea? If you want to see examples of the proper way to do a system in which the BEArchive is, look at Deviant Art, E-Hentai, Hentai-Foundry, FurAffinity, and probably a few others I'm not remembering right now.

The current system is plagued by system lag and an absolutely obnoxious way of handling free users, if that is the point, to annoy free users into purchasing a paid subscription I can tell you now that will never happen. people don't think that an experience will improve if enough money is dumped on it. Bad experience=X=paying with the hope it will be a good experience. Bad experience=not paying.

We free users can't even view the main 'page' of thumbnails without being dumped into the pay portal, so how are we supposed to use our 50 views? I am assuming the views are the full size images, and not the thumbnails on the page, which would be one of the dumber choices in history if that is in fact how it is setup. As far as i know this whole design was sprung on everyone without a warning or even a "should we redesign the site" poll. I can tell you I personally would've voted for the layout of the other gallery sites I posted above, not whatever this garbage that we are being forced. I am sorry if this is coming across as harsh, but this is all frustration trying to explore your "improved" site. Frankly, I'm surprised that I can even stay on my gallery/album/pin without being kicked to the pay portal.

Is anyone else experiencing similar or it just me?

Just adding my voice of annoyance at the new hoops for the addventure. I've been writing a lot of content for the addventure for about half my life now, and it's annoying to have it arbitrarily moved like this, especially when I think where it might be arbitrarily moved in the future. It's also annoying because using google to search the addventure for specific entries and storylines was one of my preferred method, and there's no replacement for that. I understand the addventure is  smaller part of the larger site, and that to many it's not an important part, but there are many more that it is important to. We had dozens of entries every day from people all over the world, and now it's already begun to stagnate, and there's no reason for that. Sites like CYOC and Chyoa are becoming more popular as people WANT to generate their own content. They want an outlet for that, and this is one of the oldest sites for that sort of thing.

It's been mentioned that this has been done in an attempt to draw more people to the rest of the site, in which case, I'd point out that this is a bad method of doing that. MCstories found sponsorship with Daphne's Fantasies, and they've so far done a great job of letting the site run the way it wants while earning their author's and reader's trust and support. Even sites like Vampyou encourage user generated content without **77** it behind a paywall, though they still have a paywall for the rest.

Personally, I think if bearchive would like to draw more people to the other aspects of the site, there are other ways to do that. For example, there used to be more support for using images in the stories, and I think one way to showcase the rest of the site would be to offer an easy way to link to in-site images for use with the stories. There could be a free archive of low res content, and it could link back to pay galleries for anyone interested. Additionally, there could be ways to encourage specific cooperation between different branches of the site.

At any rate, even if none of these suggestions are acceptable, I merely wanted to take a moment to join with the chorus of people expressing their displeasure at the new changes.

Hello all; I've made an account for the sake of accessing, you guessed it, the Adventure.

Now, a lot has been said in this thread and I don't want to repeat what others have said, but I do want to state that the account system seems to be a bit buggy. I've only been able to make an account today after a fair few tries as the verification email wasn't sent and then seemed to not work for a while.

I've seen concerns about this pop up elsewhere across the internet. Having to make accounts is one thing, but try to make sure that people CAN actually make accounts.

Similar to Geofront my attempts at making a free account were marked by confirmation emails that took hours longer than stated to arrive.

To the main point however not a fan of logging in just to view the Addventure. I do also see the sign up process and logging in causing people to not check it out and occasionally add.

Hi again and sorry for the delay answering, but as somebody suggested, we don't work on weekends.

I took all the necessary time to read your comments carefully.

We CARE about your comments and we will reconsider our decision to see what's the best for the majority of the community. It could mean not for all, but for the majority.

Some definitions and answers to void any speculation:

1. I am the Marketing Manager of BotComics, Inc. We are also owners of BEArchive and I work here since 2011. I am not some newbie playing around with your loved 20 year old website. BUT I have to recognize, I am not as familiar with BEArchive as I am with the comics websites, so all your feedback is valuable to me. If we need to reverse some decision because we see that's the best for the majority of the community, we will do it.

2. When we added the registration and login requirement to access Addventure it wasn't done because of the traffic or the publicity. When we designed the login/registration process it was for bearchive.com. What happened with Addventure was completely accidental. We never expected to disturb the community.

3. We are a small group of people managing a significant number of projects and despite reading and accepting some of your recommendations we can't just implement all the solutions immediately. We have limited human and economical resources and we can't do everything at the same time.

4. It will take some time for us to fix some problems and behaviors of the website. Maybe a week or two. In the meantime, I kindly ask for your patience and understanding.

5. We are evaluating the solution proposed by Adama "Open to view, register to post".

I'll keep you posted with a new post on this thread.

Have a great day.

Mariano

Was shocked when I came back and visited.  I couldn't login at first with my old credentials until I tried from the forum pages.

However, if I go back to the gallery after a few seconds it keeps redirecting me to the sign-up page even though I'm logged in.  It makes the whole site unusable. :(

Well, that's all that most of us needed to hear, I think. I'm a little confused as to where this reply on page 3 came from, though:

1. Login requiement won't be removed. You just need to create a username and subscribe to a free account.
Did you just misunderstand the question?

Either way, here's hoping that the BEAddventure gets fixed soon. I was sitting on a bunch of episode that I wasn't going to post until this was fixed, but if it really was just an accident, guess I might as well get around to it sometime today.

We know.

apparently, based on botcomics last post, they don't care.

botcomics  "I took all the necessary time to read your comments carefully."
Did you?

You failed to answer my very basic question of "what is a pin"
or
address my issue of why a BEA FAQ (your link) is on the botcomics website.  Or why i need to sign in (yet again) using google+ in order to comment or ask a question.

Your last post was a press release, not a serious reply to the issues addressed.

While most posts  revolve around the adventurer there are other concerns.

The user gallery is now some random morphs with a redirect to a subscription page?
Back button kicks back to last off site Page. The says certainly says welcome to the BEA. That is the electronic middle finger.

The "main" page is just a bunch of random morphs? with a redirect to the subscription page with no details. WTF?

so, a noobie has no chance to see what this is all about. Unlike the old main page where a clear offering is made and the divisions between free and paid are clearly delineated with the subsections within the BEA clearly outlined.

There is a lot here but thanks to the new format and the redirects, they will never know that.

Property management in the electronic age, you are doing it wrong.

Botcomics, thank you very much for your response. This leaves me far more assured about the state of things than I had been for the past several days.

Hopefully all these issues can be sorted out soon.

This eases some of my concerns if this is in fact a genuine response. Perhaps you should revert to the old htmls with the new login until the majority of the kinks are fixed, perhaps with a "beta test" link of the new system for the users to try and find the wonkiness? This should've been done in the first place, as most other places I know will do a test before complete roll out.

Hi Hi...!  I use the forum quite a bit and have a free membership there which I enjoy, but I can no longer access the user gallery without the PAY PAGE coming up.  If  I scroll down to look at the images or click on anything, the PAY UP! page comes up.  I do enjoy the new images posted on the new page, but, like I said, I can't access or see the pictures for more than a few moments.  I miss not being able to save any images I might like.  Am I doing something wrong or not accessing the right area or ...????
