Foreign Affairs
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:20:38 AM »
I was going to post in the "Politics" thread, but I realized that politics in somebody else's country is a whole different kettle of fish. Ages ago each house of the U.S. Congress had a committee to deal with issues involving other countries. The House of Representatives had the Foreign Affairs Committee; the Senate had a Foreign Relations Committee. My lifelong hero, Warren G. Magnuson, said that this was because the House had the energy for affairs; senators were lucky if they had relations.

So we watch Egypt. I am not a fan of military coups; they just don't do any good, and usually make things worse. But this time... See, this time the head of the armed forces went on tv and said, "You dudes have been jacking off for a year. People are hungry, people are homeless; they are in the streets demanding you do something, and you keep jacking off. So unless you do something by next Thursday, we take over."

So President Morisy (who blew off a great gig doing vocals for the Smiths  ;)) went on tv and said, "Neener, neener, I got elected, my Momma loves me, and my shit don't stink. Fuck you."

So Thursday morning (Cairo time) the Army moved. Among other things, they appointed the Chief Justice to fill the office of president until elections. That's what charmed me.

See, chief justices have a number of characteristics. They've all been trained in the law, which means being locked in a room trying to figure out what assholes were doing by reading cases. They tend to be shy, and they secretly want to be loved. These things usually make them harmless. That's good. They are used to writing out how they decide things. Usually, they're cool. They're not the people you go to if you want to rain Hell on your enemies.

Gotta love it! Let's hope that everyone there can keep their shit together for the next round. Heck, *someone's* got to show the rest of the Islamic countries how to do it (I'm looking at you, Turkey...).

I heard a babbling head on the radio wondering why the Egyptians couldn't do things "like we did".

Huh? They are:

And I agree, rtpoe--Turkey is a good example, if they can skip the genocide.

I thought this coup might have been different. I was wrong. As usual, these military jerkoffs have no idea how to govern.

The Brotherhood, having basically come in first place in the election, thought that it meant that they didn't have to work with or even listen to the other parties.

The military believes that it is the embodiment of "the Will of the People", and therefore doesn't need to worry about such things as laws and due process.

Democracy is not easy.

Today's death toll in Egypt is now more than 600, according to The New York Times.

For the U.S., the situation is complicated beyond belief; we're suddenly standing up for the Muslim Brotherhood.

But perhaps the situation is also simple. We should not be sending financial aid to any country in the world -- Egypt, Israel and all the rest, while so much needs to be done at home.

And we certainly must not fund massacres.

Originally I was optimistic that this coup might be different. I was wrong.

Democracy is a hard thing, and easily lost. But it remains, as Churchill said, a terrible form of government whose sole saving grace is that it is better than all the others that have been tried. Had the enemies of the Muslim Brotherhood been able to restrain their enthusiasm, they would have an election coming up in 4 months.
