SOPA...
« on: December 17, 2011, 01:21:21 PM »
SOPA (stop online piracy act) is set to be voted on in the senate on this upcoming wednesday.
Welcome to Corporate Censorship.

The senate announced that this bill would be put off until next year, but in a highly questionable move, they quietly rescheduled the vote for a special session of congress next week, while most news outlets are reporting that it is put off for the time being. This 'rush' to implement the bill is intended to hurry the bill into law before the rising public outcry becomes widespread.

I cannot even begin to express the magnitude of idiocy in this bill. Essentially, any site, on which any user, posts any content of any kind which is even claimed (even falsely) to be copyrighted... can result in the entire site being blacklisted from functioning inside the US (and in many cases abroad as well). The proposed system for this occurring eliminates due process of law, reasonable objection, or even scrutiny of the claim.

Copyrighted content claims can include:
quoted text
images
video content
music content
advertisements containing links to sites containing any of the above
and user posted links to sites which contain any of the above

The terms of the law sound too ridiculous to be real. But it is.

Realistically, large multibillion dollar sites like google, **24**, and youtube, will manage to avoid being shut down (even though all 3 are in massive violation of the proposed law). But you can more or less kiss small upstart online businesses goodbye.

Entrepreneurial groups are warning that if the bill passes, that supporting upstart internet business may become a dangerous investment. And that innovation on the internet is direly threatened.

The engineers who created the internet are claiming that it may be seriously detrimental to the security and functionality of the internet internationally.

Amnesty international claims that it will help totalitarian regimes to control the flow of information.

Fair Use claims that the bill will destroy almost everything they've achieved vs. corporate domination of the law.

Wikipedia site owner is threatening to shut the site down if the bill passes, not that he'd have to, it's part of the half the internet which would be criminalized by this bill.

Numerous small business lawyers are claiming that the bill would empower large corporations to abuse the law to crush upstart competition.

Here's a link to a video on the topic:

(just posting this link may become illegal next week)

here is a quoted post from another forum (which may also become illegal next week):

If you don't know what to do, or how to do anything about this...

Or maybe your not from American... you can still stop this:

Americans sign the petition here: http://americancensorship.org

Use your Tumblr account.. Tweet #SOPA and #ProtectIP two government acts/bills designed to take down your internet freedom.

Tell everyone you know about this and if you have american friends make sure they are aware of the issue and tell them to spread the word.

http://americancensorship.org has many ways you can get involved, last week alone over 1 million emails were sent to government officials about this subject.

It's worth pointing out that I am not a conspiracy theorist type, nor am I highly politically active. This issue is simply too large to happily ignore. And the implications for even the future of the BEA (and most other internet forums) are literally at stake here. Do something, unless you want the RIAA and MPAA to purchase your first ammendment, and due process rights in congress next week. This bill is expected to pass, only 'significant' and 'immediate' public outcry can prevent this train wreck of legislation from occurring.

The truly astonishing thing is how little mainstream media attention this piece of legislation is getting. Just a few days ago Universal Music illustrated how out of hand things become when a company is given the tools to acts as judge jury and executioner. Universal music abused Google's copyright tools to claim copyright over a song created and owned by the website Megaupload.com and strip it from youtube.com. And other than a PR gaffe there has been zero consequence for Universal yet. (See http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/12/youtube-universal-megaupload/ for more details.)

A law like SOPA that allows any company to pull such a tactic and not just remove a video but an entire website from the face of the internet with no fear of reprisal is completely and utterly mind boggling. I'll grant that protecting intellectual property and rewarding creators is indeed an important matter, but what's being suggested by this law is borderline totalitarian. No private corporate entity should be allowed to unilaterally pass judgements - the temptation for abuse to gain competitive advantage is just too great.

In addition I would like to add that there is also the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) another law with the same goal to SOPA that's currently working its way through congress. For further information and a rather enlightened discussion of the topic I'd encourage everyone to peruse http://politics.slashdot.org/story/11/12/17/006235/no-sopa-vote-until-2012 and pay attention to the comments marked as Insightful.

The truly astonishing thing is how little mainstream media attention this piece of legislation is getting.

Here's the reason:

Who Owns The Media? The 6 Monolithic Corporations That Control Almost Everything We Watch, Hear And Read

"Back in 1983, approximately 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the United States.  Today, ownership of the news media has been concentrated in the hands of just six incredibly powerful media corporations.  These corporate behemoths control most of what we watch, hear and read every single day.  They own television networks, cable channels, movie studios, newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, music labels and even many of our favorite websites. Sadly, most Americans don't even stop to think about who is feeding them the endless hours of news and entertainment that they constantly ingest.  Most Americans don't really seem to care about who owns the media.  But they should.  The truth is that each of us is deeply influenced by the messages that are constantly being pounded into our heads by the mainstream media.  The average American watches 153 hours of television a month.  In fact, most Americans begin to feel physically uncomfortable if they go too long without watching or listening to something.  Sadly, most Americans have become absolutely addicted to news and entertainment and the ownership of all that news and entertainment that we crave is being concentrated in fewer and fewer hands each year.

The six corporations that collectively control U.S. media today are Time Warner, Walt Disney, Viacom, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., CBS Corporation and NBC Universal.  Together, the "big six" absolutely dominate news and entertainment in the United States.  But even those areas of the media that the "big six" do not completely control are becoming increasingly concentrated. For example, Clear Channel now owns over 1000 radio stations across the United States.  Companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are increasingly dominating the Internet.

But it is the "big six" that are the biggest concerns.  When you control what Americans watch, hear and read you gain a great deal of control over what they think.  They don't call it "programming" for nothing.

Back in 1983 it was bad enough that about 50 corporations dominated U.S. media.  But since that time, power over the media has rapidly become concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people....

In 1983, fifty corporations dominated most of every mass medium and the biggest media merger in history was a $340 million deal. … In 1987, the fifty companies had shrunk to twenty-nine....In 1990, the twenty-nine had shrunk to twenty three...In 1997, the biggest firms numbered ten and involved the $19 billion Disney-ABC deal, at the time the biggest media merger ever.… [In 2000] AOL Time Warner’s $350 billion merged corporation [was] more than 1,000 times larger [than the biggest deal of 1983].

-- Ben H. Bagdikian, The Media Monopoly, Sixth Edition, (Beacon Press, 2000), pp. xx—xxi

Today, six colossal media giants tower over all the rest.  Much of the information in the chart below comes from mediaowners.com.  The chart below reveals only a small fraction of the media outlets that these six behemoths actually own....

These gigantic media corporations do not exist to objectively tell the truth to the American people.  Rather, the primary purpose of their existence is to make money.

These gigantic media corporations are not going to do anything to threaten their relationships with their biggest advertisers (such as the largest pharmaceutical companies that literally spend billions on advertising), and one way or another these gigantic media corporations are always going to express the ideological viewpoints of their owners.

Fortunately, an increasing number of Americans are starting to wake up and are realizing that the mainstream media should not be trusted.  According to a new poll just released by Gallup, the number of Americans that have little to no trust in the mainstream media (57%) is at an all-time high.

That is one reason why we have seen the alternative media experience such rapid growth over the past few years.  The mainstream media has been losing credibility at a staggering rate, and Americans are starting to look elsewhere for the truth about what is really going on..."

SOPA enters the stage... and now there will be "no" legitimate information at all.
