Some 'So bad they are good movies' that have come out lately, some just a few years ago;

Supershark
Dinoshark
Jersey Shore Shark Attack
Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus
Mega Shark Versus Mega Crocosaurus
Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid
Dinocroc
Dinocroc Vs. Supergator
Sharktopus
Snakes On A Train
Mega Piranha
Piranhaconda
2 - Headed Shark Attack
Malibu Shark Attack
Shark Swarm
Megalodon
Deep Shock
Loch Ness Terror
Sands Of Oblivion
Awakened
Abominable
Lost Treasure Of The Grand Canyon

And coming soon the conclusion to the Mega Shark trilogy, Mega Shark against its' ultimate foe;

Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark

And.....I am not ashamed of it, but all but the last one listed (because it has not been released yet) I have bought on dvd!!!!!

Ooof, virtually everything on that list falls on the wrong side of my own "so bad" spectrum...as in, they're awful yet not so delightfully ridiculous that they make it back around the loop into "so bad it's good" territory.  I could not fathom spending more than a few minutes of attention--much less good money--on any of those movies.  Of course, that's just based on my own tastes; since "Syfy" keeps making these things, I assume that means that people keep watching.
be seeing you...

But one of the reasons to watching these is, you can count how many ridiculous things are incorporated in them, it is hilarious!

Quoted for truth.

My time's too important to me (and life too short) to waste watching this filler... no amount of 'fun' obtained from admiring how awful they are, or even the T&A would make actually sitting through them worthwhile.

Same applies to most of the sequel-nauseum franchise garbage mentioned earlier... despite the big budgets and name actors, more competent VFX and occasional box-office success, so many of those movies are not only insulting to the intelligence of the viewer, but also an atrocious waste of time and money.

I'd rather spend the finite hours I've got on the planet doing just about ANYthing (**83**, eating, etc...) rather than consuming this dreck like some addle-brained drone mindlessly stuffing the coffers of the companies advertising/making/distributing this crap. But that's just me. ;)

Meanwhile...

For the first time ever, Rotten Tomatoes has had to shut down its "Comments" section after users responded to negative reviews of "The Dark Knight Rises" with profanity and threats directed towards the reviewers.

And this was before anyone in the general public had had a chance to see the movie....

To revisit the earlier comments on the Total Recall remake: at Comic-Con, the actress appeared in her prosthetics and costume, and caused quite a stir.  You can probably find some more images with a Google search, but in the meantime here's Hollywood's latest star, Kaitlyn Leeb:

Went to see the new Batman movie today and I mostly enjoyed it. At two hours and forty five minutes it is almost as long as Gone with the Wind. I recommend you see it if you haven't. It did drag a few times but not for long. I did enjoy The Avengers more. My $ 0.02.

I was prepared to let this be my sole reaction to The Dark Knight Rises, but the more I think on this movie, the more I have to call bullshit.

That is not to say that the movie is not thrilling and diverting, or that there is no suspense or wit (Cilian Murphy is back, baby, in his Crane/Scarecrow role but here as judge of a kangaroo court), or that Anne Hathaway is not fine.  Plus, it does my city of Pittsburgh proud.  As Batman zooms around in his Bat, he goes down our Smithfield Street over and over and over again, edited together to make it look ten times longer than it really is.  We glimpse Hines Ward, we glimpse the UPMC Tower, we glimpse Soldiers and Sailors Memorial.  It does its job and gets far better use out of us than earlier movies ranging from Innocent Blood to Striking Distance to Inspector Gadget.

But to actually think about this movie for a few seconds is to appreciate what utter bullshit it is.  Even a James Bond movie makes more sense, or at least it can.  Auric Goldfinger seeks to serve Red China while raising the value of his own gold.  Alec Trevelyan seeks to loot Great Britain.  Gustav Graves is a North Korean so crazed that even his own father, a North Korean general, realizes he's nuts and a potentially backfiring liability.  Eliot Carver is William Randolph Hearst gone a little too proactive.  But now we call back the League of Nihilists, er, I mean, the League of Shadows from the first movie, and it's pretty clear that Bane (for all of Limbaugh's clueless "It's Bain Capital and the Democrats will pounce!" psychosis) symbolizes, if anything, the Occupy movement.  The Occupy movement getting hold of a fusion bomb -- riiiiiight.  When it was all they could do just to get hold of a park.  The director's brother decided to take cues from "A Tale of Two Cities," which is unusually well quoted at the movie's end, and I guess that's noble and all -- except that today there is no French Revolution, I mean NONE.  It's a wonder they didn't go whole hog and make Bane a black Chicagoan.  Superimposing "Two Cities," with a touch of "Dr. Zhivago" thrown in, upon a post-2008 America is beyond unreal, it's antireal.

So I take Pal's point, but with a teaspoon of salt.  There's still sweet and gentle stuff out there like "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World" or "Safety Not Guaranteed."  In the meantime, I find this dazzling heap of bat guano to be unwittingly motivational.  My city does indeed deserve to be the site of some great story -- but this is really not the one.

adendum to my previous movie post:

John Carter: This movie is GREAT. Vastly better than it's advertising suggests. This one's a must see if you like either action or fantasy movies. It's a rare thing anymore that hollywood can get fantasy storytelling right, and they hit this one out of the park. 10/10

The Avengers: better than I hoped it would be. my vote for best super hero movie of the year (although if you count Dredd or John Carter as a 'comic hero' movie, then it's a tough 3-way split). 10/10

The Dark Knight Rises: by far the weakest of the trilogy. hard to tell the 2 leading ladies apart in some scenes, plot holes you could drive an aircraft carrier through (sideways), some fairly bad lines in it, ungratifying villain, plot twists are predictable and lean towards 'silly' rather than 'clever', oh... and occupy wall street seems to be the underlying model for the bad guys. Good thing the ultimate 1% super hero poster boy stopped their "uppity poorfolk" terroristic ways... in a word, I wish I had not seen it. Especially after the last batman movie, which was SOOOOOO good. 4/10 (maybe higher if you imbibe something to shut down your higher brain functions)

Spiderman: it was well put together. It "reboots" the creation story for spiderman, and it handles it pretty competently. The crane operators setting up a swing-path for spider man was a bit 'eye-rolling', but overall, a fun spider man movie. It features one of my favorite (but not well known) spidy-verse villains. And it was one of the few movies where 3D was highly appropriate. 8/10

Prometheus: biggest disappointment of the year (handily worse than batman's lame duck finale). I'd like to say that because they spent countless millions making it, that it's at least a 'decent' movie for the average viewer, even if it's not a financial success... but it's not. It just... sucks. I'll qualify that by saying that the acting was first rate. The cinematography was truely phenomenal (possibly oscar worthy cinematography). But that's the end of the list of good things, and there's a long list of bad things. I've tried to find an angle from which this movie can be seen as a "good" movie, but I can't find one. It tries so hard to be clever, but in the end I feel like this moronic film was just ineffectually trying to dry hump my brain without the faintest idea of how to go about it. Bad sci fi, bad science, bad history, bad geography, bad lines, bad character continuity, bad plot twists, bad attempt to hijack the xenomorph fictionverse, bad at running out of the way of a rolling spaceship, bad bad bad. 2/10

Men in Black 3: good movie. possibly better than the first one. big step up from the second one. I really liked how well they handled the time period culture shock stuff. And a really nice story overall (story really is the lifeblood of a movie/book/etc). well worth a watch. 9/10

Dredd: biggest (good) surprise all year. This movie is first rate dystopian sci fi/comic hero genre stuff. Remember that movie in the 80's with Sly Stalone? Remember how it was kinda lovable, but also kinda bad? Forget that movie ever happened. This new film is how you should remember Judge Dredd. It's first rate. And it actually sticks to it's comic cannon (which generally means a superior plot compared to hollywood's sense of writing). If they would have made *this* judge dredd back in the 80's, then people would talk about it in the same sentences with terminator, aliens, and robocop. If you like action, sci fi, or comicbook movies, any of the three, go rent this one. if you like all three, go rent it right now. 10/10

Battleship: 6/10 "not as bad as I feared". Acceptably passable popcorn movie. Ironically I actually rate the transformers movies worse than this one. This one doesn't try (and fail) as hard to be funny or clever. It's plot is simple, the characters are as one dimensional as a sheet of paper, but it works. There's no "cringing moment" where you feel like the director/writers are kicking you in the brain. And that kinda surprised me. It feels like an "above-average made-for-tv movie", you know, like something the sci fi channel would slop together on their own, but with better special effects.

Total Recall: It would have been better if they changed the title, and changed the plot-device 'total recall memory implants' thing. because this is a decent movie, which fails to best it's namesake. The whole time I'm watching it, I'm thinking "this isn't bad, but I'd rather be watching the original..." 7/10

Looper: a surprisingly decent time-travel film. fun action, but more of a character movie than anything. And the characters are pretty good. action movie + vaguely thought provoking, at the same time. it's a winning combo. 8/10

Snow White and the Huntsman: I liked it. In spite of the emotionally flatline twilight starlet in the lead role as snow white... I still liked it. She did better in this than in her better known films. But really, the villain stole the show. Charlize Theron, she's not quite a Keith Ledger's Joker, but she makes an awesome villain, very enjoyable performance on her end. The dwarfs made me want to go dig up my old copy of Krull, because they strongly reminded me of the band of theives who join the young king in that old flick. 8/10

Expendables 2: better than 1... really in the first one, I couldn't actually see any of the action through the 'shakey cam' nonsense. 2 is "better" (if only because I can see what's happening). But, it's still really a "cameo movie", if it didn't have a zillion well known stars in it, nobody would care about the movie. It's 'ok', leaning towards 'semi-good-ish'. 6/10

I still need to see Skyfall, Cloud Atlas, Brave, and a few others :)

MIB3 had some good ideas in it, and I can appreciate that they intended to deepen the characters and their relationships, but some of those time-travel hijinks were not well done (though they did look impressive), and logical inconsistencies in plot devices (particularly major ones) tend to drag down my estimation of a movie/series.

I saw Brave and enjoyed it quite a bit, but it got clobbered by Wreck-It Ralph, which was awesome in so many ways.
Skyfall was enjoyable, but definitely designed to connect Craig's "prequel"/early-Bond character back to the first Bond movies; whether or not that matters to you may color your own enjoyment of the movie.
be seeing you...

well... as soon as you do "time travel" in a terrestrial setting, you have a logical consistency issue right there.
We tend to think of the earth as a stationary thing, and imagine that time travel would somehow stay stuck to a terrestrial location. But... the earth is rotating at about 1500 mph (at the equator), it's orbiting the sun at about 75,000 mph, and the solar system is moving around the milky way at about 700,000 mph, and the milky way itself is moving through space at a couple hundred thousand mph ...so, if you travel through time for more than a second or two, you will arrive at your destination time, in the same location you left, except that spot will not be where the planet earth is currently located.

Not to mention the fact that time travel fiction is almost universally flawed in it's depiction of the physics of time. (though that's a somewhat theoretical statement)

So, you know, when watching films (or reading books) I take time travel as a "high fantasy" plot device, and try not to apply logic too much :)
If I don't hold it against H.G.Wells, I can't really hold it against MIB3 either :)

I've been perusing the reviews of "Les Miserables". Not that I ever intend to see it, but because I'm curious about the phenomenon. Frankly, I think the whole thing - book, musical, movie - is a bit overrated.

A big doorstop of a novel, with an improbable plot and almost no characterization. Though it does cover important themes like justice and mercy. Anyway, someone thought that the best thing to do with it was turn it into a musical. Right. A musical about miserable people. Joy, joy. And the movie version, from what I gather of the negative reviews, has the cast bellowing as if they are on a stage trying to reach the last row in the uppermost balcony.

What it should have been is an opera. Only we don't have a Francesco Maria Piave or Giuseppe Verdi these days... Nor a general public that can be persuaded to go to one.
