Sorry I didn't answer when you asked this before. I think, just like last time, someone answered as I would. DruulEmpire has it right in this thread.
In my case, I chose my avatar for the following reasons...
1. I considered a photo of myself and decided most(all?) viewers would prefer a busty woman instead. (no ego problem HERE!)

2. This particular character (Kenji) is a personal favorite of mine.
3. The original drawing was scanned, colored and nudified by me ..AND..
4. Was, IHMO, my best work up to that point and illustrated what I can and like to do.
5. I feel an avatar needs to be simple enough to be easily identified despite it's small size. By removing the background from the original drawing, I liked how well this image looked given the pixels (125x125).
6. (I keep thinking of more) In the religious and gaming definitions of the word "Avatar", it means (in simple terms) someone who REPRESENTS you (NOT who LOOKS like you). I prefer to think of "Kenji" as a separate individual who "fronts" for me (in a manner of speaking). For the purposes of the party, you could have her there without me physically present, but seeing and hearing what she sees and hears (she could speak on my behalf, too). ..OR I could be present at the party, but always out of sight from the viewpoint of the reader of the comic strip (..or invisible and next to Kenji who is the only one who can hear and see me). (Hope this helps more then it confuses)

Notice, too, that in my signature is my disclaimer that I could never be confused for my avatar. I added that when I, RandomX, and others were playing "musical avatars" with each other.
P.S. I can send you other images of Kenji to have a selection of poses if you like.
For example...
