Actually Pal that's not true when I only used winzip .rar files downloaded as unknown file types. The .rar incoding is unique to the winrar software, seemingly anyway.

Suffit Expander for Windows should handle the rar format.  Plus it's easier to use than winzip -- just drag the archive onto it and BAM you get a folder with the contents.  With winzip, you never know what your going to get (usually 100 files in the wrong place).

Just trying to help lars... when files download as unspecified file types it often has something to do with the identifier pref settings in the app doing the downloading. Further, most modern OSes (at least OSX, so I assume that WinXP is similar) provide prefs for 'helper apps' to automatically define what app is to be used for what file type (including various generic ones). On my system (again OSX, so not directly applicable to you probably) such settings exist in both browser apps and the OS itself.

.rar is common... it's used for lots of larger/multipart files on newsgroups. As the good Dr. F says, it should be no problem for any relatively modern OS to deal with it, either straight out of the box or at most, with some free utils. Like the Dr., I prefer Stuffit Expander (free, and have been using some flavor of it for decades so I trust it) to deal with everything... rar, zip, sit, etc... all those compressed file formats. I believe it (or it's fully version) even deals with earlier formats like Unix Tar files too.
