Hades wasn't the god of death in Greek Mythology.
A person's life was determined by
the three Fates - with the one,
Atropos the ultimate determiner on how long a person lived. Then it was up to either
Thanatus to mercifully end your life, or one of his sisters, who were more cruel, to take you out in some terrible way.
Hades, like
Poseidon was a brother to
Zeus; and while
Zeus was the ruler of the heavens and king of the gods, his two brothers were each the supreme rulers of their own domains.
Poseidon, was the ruler of all the seas; and
Hades the ruler of the underworld that was named for him, along with
Tartarus below it, where the
Titans were imprisoned, and the
Elysian Fields, which was about the closest thing the ancient Greeks had to a heaven.
But then neither
DC nor
Marvel weren't above playing fast and loose with the background for their mythological based characters. Like how many times did
Ragnarok - the "twilight"(sic) of the gods come up in the long publishing history of
Thor.
