Speaking of big corporation that robs from america. I dont eat at AppleBee's after finding out how they tried to get away with paying employees for mandatory meetings and paying themselves with tips that supposedly suppose to all go to busser and dishwasher. Anyone who work there have to pay a 3% of the sales toward tips, but failing disclose that the tips are really manager bonuses. After working for 3 month I find out from another manager, and I ask the busser how much were they getting to make sure they got my share of the tips. I quit! Oh they also lock out the computer so you cant claim your own tips, and I suspect that they never claim any of the tips they were getting from us.

This is the latest trend of corporate restuarants, using the server tips to subsidize the manager salary to lower cost of food at the expense of the worker. Dishwasher and busser dont need to live above poverty, and beside any bum can clear tables and wash dishes.

I do myself hate corporations that have gotten too big for their britches; Comcast and the sort. You know the point that they all reach wherein they become servants to the shareholders and not the customers? Basically any company with a GDP larger than any developing nation. We could make a list of them all but then the owner of this fine site would have to shell out more for storage space.

But on another point, that is in fact what I love about this country. Capitalism. That you can become as well off as you please; you don't even have to graduate college. I am currently running two companies that will have me set for life in the next ten years or so. Or, I guess I could quit and get myself a job at Wal-Mart pushing a mop. I just couldn't see myself taking the easy road like most people. But that's what great about America. We all have a choice. Some choose to believe that they have no choice. Some choose to push a mop, some choose to market the mop, and some choose to run the company that makes and sells the mop.

No, we sold our manufacturing base years ago.

Overseas labor costs in developing countries that are a tiny fraction of what they are in the States (along with the MUCH lower standard of living that workers in such countries obtain) had something to do with it too.

Sure.  And probably sometime in our generation, the standard of living for the middle class in the US will meet those countries.

Well, I seriously doubt it will go that low that quickly, but surely there will be a drop (relative to what's been enjoyed by middle-class workers, particularly in auto/manufacturing, historically). I doubt this can be avoided (already in progress as I'm sure you know)... given the strength of unions some time ago (and the improved quality of life that afforded their members) and the globalization of the world economy which already well underway (and irreversible) causes corporations (many of them American) to migrate production overseas for economic benefit/competitiveness.

What are you going to do? Force or persuade Americans to purchase ONLY those products and services actually provided by American labor? Something like that... some draconian legislation designed to close the US market to foreign competition... that's the only way I can see to keep/return manufacturing jobs in/to the US. Like Mitt Romney's laughable promises (sadly believed by a lot of Michigan residents) to return the US auto industry to it's former glory.

Self sustainability with zero imprint on mother earth should be the stock holder motivation, but corporation have no soul regardless of the 14th amendment protection they claim to have. Ironically the 14th amendment was to protect people from becoming slaves, and yet corporation today patent genome of a living person. It's not legal to own people, but they can own what makes people. Corporation are treated with all the rights of being a person, but what if they don't behave well? can you throw a corporation in jail?

Walmart, as you know paid chil6 worker 8 cent per hour to make Kathy Lee Gifford line of clothing, which advertise to donate % of the profit to help underprivileged chil6ren. they got caught and within a few years they found another starving country to plunder. Until they run out of these country, or create one here. When a corporation get granted a person status and thus leave the shareholder and CEO not accountable for any unlawful action, then the action of the corporation are left to the feasibility study of the cost of doing business legally or illegally and let bottom line profit drive the final decision.
