I love those Quicktime VR thingies... given how much you can zoom in on the image, they must have captured the panorama sections at fairly high rez.

Who do I call if I spot an old beer can among the rocks?

Just remember that if Bush proposes a manned trip to Mars, we're only going there for the oil.

You see how stupid that sounds?

Yep, sounds mighty stupid re: Mars. If you're implying that such a 'for the oil' comment sounds stupid in EVERY context, then IMHO THAT'S even stupider than the Mars comment.

Or did you not see those maps dividing Iraq into plots for add'l oil exploration development for interested bidders that was prepared PRIOR to 9/11 by WHO? The Bush admin, that's who! Just one of the well over 10K documents used to prepare former National Security Council member Paul O'Neil's new book. And it's just one of the documents actually shown on 60 Minutes last night.

A general CNN link if anyone's curious: http://money.cnn.com/2004/01/13/news/economy/oneill/index.htm?cnn=yes

You mean the one that said "Secret" on it?

Thanks for that link, Wolf.

That site, www.panoramas.dk, is one of the absolute coolest places on the entire Internet.

I can't wait for Spirit (what a dorky name) to get off the platform and start moving around.

To those wondering what the delay is, the platform is at least a foot above ground level, and the main ramp down is blocked by an airbag. So they have to turn the thing around and try a backup ramp. It's not easy. Unlike a simple remote control vehicle, this one has a 10-15 minute time delay between the sending of the signal and its reception. So you have to code in all the instructions first, send them over, and hope you got it right.

That bare patch to the west (the one where the lander smudged the dirt as it bounced) looks mighty interesting....

With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance

And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow...

I heard in a NASA press conference that the Spirit rover has a life expectiancy of 600 to 800 meters. Of course, the hills thay REALLY want to look at are over 3 kilometers away.

Quite a nice 6 min animation of the Mars Rover from take off to landing.

Dramatic indeed. Post landing, there was a definite "And on the Second Day..." feel to it...

Nasa rover breaks down on Mars.
Damn not again. Well, we still have the Beagle orbiter...

Latest news is that Spirit may not be dead yet...just unable to connect with NASA due to a storm.  They hope to have communication reconnected by this weekend.
