I'd expound upon the evidence of decline in modern civilization of which the popularity of twitter is symptomatic, but I'm too tired and frankly, twitter isn't that interesting, even as an easy target of jest. The "#" sign however (which has been co-opted by twitter) is more interesting (to me). I've always thought of it as the NUMBER symbol/sign, though on occasion I've seen it referred to as the POUND sign (especially when referring to a telephone keypad) and more recently as the CRUNCH sign (as used by the Linux distro "Crunch Bang" which is abbreviated "#!" ...were I not so tired I could look into this further.

Now that I think about it. I think that there could be some reasonable and sensible justification for the symbol being called a hash tag. Possibly through computing languages and reference sorting?

(also. expound. ha!)

Since I don't twit or do any social media I did not understand why the # sign was being corrected by the Executive Secretary when I was doing reports. She is 25 and textes and uses Faceb00k and Twitter all the time so when I would type on my report " AMR # 1981 responded on scene at approximate 1030 hours " she would delete the # sign. After all, I've used that symbol for either weight ( she is about 100# ) or short for number ( #1981 ) for ages. She said I was using the # incorrectly and I was flummoxed. It's obviously a generational thing since I remember when gay meant happy, not homosexual. Guess another thing is changing it's definition.  :(
