Here's my first attempt at shooting a bunch of stills (9 in this case) with my $77. digicam and then stitching them
together (using all default software settings):

Of course, the original stitched image was almost 2 meg in size... I used Graphic Converter to scale and compress
it down for forum limits.

Several things come to mind as ways to improve this (aside from the obvious: a better camera and practice):

Shoot with more overlap between frames... presumably this would help the software produce less visible seams.
I think I must have had almost no overlap at all between images #8 and #9.

Make an effort to keep the horizon at the same height in each still... I seem to have lowered the camera by a few
degrees (raising the horizon in frame) as I shot from left to right. It looks like the software tried to compensate,
but this resulted in having to crop more off the top of the photo than I'd have liked. My cheapo digicam has no faux
ground-glass field markings to assist in maintaining a height reference... just have to do it by eye and better
next time.

Note the focal length being used to take the stills... I did not and simply guessed when the software asked me for that
figure... I assume that it uses that variable to help manipulate the images to remove the lens distortion at the edges
of each still image... to achieve a better result (minimal seam artifacts).

If necessary shoot stills at a higher rez (I think these were less than 1K each) so as to be able to leave plenty of
extra space above and below the main area of interest (in terms of a horizontal panorama like this). In the process
of joining the images and attempting to remove lens distortion, the software warps the top and bottom edges of
the resulting stitched image pretty significantly (hence the severe cropping). So, shoot at higher rez with fairly
loose framing.

Avoid having the sun directly in frame... unless you can live with the resulting flare and lowering of contrast in
that part of the finished image. Some of that could also be alleviated if I had been using a better camera with
manual exposure controls... mine's just everything-automatic: like it or lump it.

Still, kind of amusing for a first attempt. This is LA of course, shot as I was walking the pooch near my house
(which is behind me relative to the photo). That cluster of tall buildings near the left is downtown LA which is
about 5 miles away, and that other cluster of tall buildings near the right is Century City (where all the agents
have their offices), which is perhaps 7 or 8 miles away. If it had been a slightly clearer day when these pix were
shot, the Pacific Ocean would be visible out past Century City. That's the 101 freeway snaking through Hollywood
in the middle of the picture. If you look very closely, you can just barely make out the Capitol Records building
with its trylon on top and the giant iPod ad (mostly blue and black) in Hollywood. I took the original stills last
February ...I think it was in the mid 70s at the time with very little wind.

Damn.  That is fine work.  I try this all the time... and even with a tripod and tremendous care I don't manage to get the continuity you have achieved here.

Well done, mate!

Thanks for the compliment, but I think my first attempt there leaves lots to be desired.
I'll be carrying the camera around with me over the next few days... I'll try and take some
of my own advice and produce a much better one.

Use a tripod.  It will help a lot.  If you don't have a tripod (or if for some reason your camera can't use one) set it on something level and shoot away.

I've got tripods, but don't like to carry them around of course. If I had a couple of too-high or too-low pix
within a set, I suppose that I could shift them up or down (content relative to frame) BEFORE running the whole
set through the stitching software. As my camera is only 2.1MP I also suppose I could hold the camera
perpendicular to the ground (for a vertically-oriented aspect ratio) and then shoot with lots of overlap..
that along with the 2MP setting ought to radically increase the quality of things.

Not that anyone asked (about anything) but yesterday there was a FORTY degree difference in temperature
between the coast and valley (Malibu and Van Nuys, world capital of porn production)... it was 64 on the coast
and 104 in the valley. At the time, it was just about right in the middle where I live.

Since you have el-cheapo-deluxo a lens hood is out of the question, so how about shooting from underneath the shade of a tree? It will help diminish the lens flare.

Palomine, I don't know much about photography and the way you're piecing the pics together, but that looks great!

so are we supposed to use the picture and our first hand knowledge of wandering the streets of LA to decipher where you live?

Da-Yamn, I have 1280 pixels across on my monitor and I'm going "OK, I want to reply, but I can't find the reply button."

Fascinating view from where you live, Palomine .  Between this photo, the satellite view of your neighborhood (with circle showing you or your neighbor's house) and the overall view when the forest fires were almost smoking you out, I guess we've had a clue or two about where you live.

Not that we would do anything nasty with the info.

Now the question burning in my mind, did they charge you extra for the "overlooking view of the ocean" when you moved in?
Thank you for your patience as I indulge my need to share.

Graphic Converter is a pretty kick-ass program for the price.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

In answer to various folks:

Yes, a lens hood/shade would keep frames adjacent to the one with the sun in it from getting flared. While that
would be a good thing, it would probably create even more discontinuity at the seams (exposure wise) given that
the single sun frame would be all washed out compared to the ones immediately to the right and left.

No ocean or city view from my home specifically... just other hills. If I did have such a view, the house would be
worth another $400K minimum. As it happens, I'm looking at a parcel of land on a hillside that's maybe 1/3 of
a mile from the ocean... thinking about building a new house and then moving. It'll be pretty damn expensive
though... I haven't finished crunching all the numbers yet. That property... IT'S got a helluva view of the Pacific.

The original stitched image (after stitching and cropping, but before scaling down) was FOUR times as wide (and
four times as high. THAT was big... and it contained all kinds of detail lost in the little tiny jpeg above... you could
ID LOTS of buildings and landmarks that are simply lost to compression and resizing above.

Yep Graphic Converter IS a great program. I don't use anything else for general stuff, but then again my needs are
pretty modest... I'm no morpher.

good camera... horrible panoramic photographer.... plus crappy use of crappy stitching software included...
