There's a simple way to download the file. Copy the link
and paste it into an e-mail message that you send to
yourself. Then, open the e-mail and right-click on the
link. Choose "Save As", and voila! You can save it on
your computer.

That sounds too delightfully clever to possibly be true, but it almost makes sense so I will absolutely try it. TIA regardless for the suggestion!

Added later: well, it didn't work but I still appreciate the reply. When I try to save the link from the received email (either by right-click-equivalent 'save as' or by opening in a new browswer window, I still only wind up with the 8K 'vf35-1.asx' file, which is some kind of pointer apparently. I'll try another browser to see if it behaves any differently. Thanks again.

And later still: well, no luck with either Safari or iCab. For some inexplicable reason IE won't log into my email (I never use it for that) so I can't try that. I also poked around looking for it in various cache files, but since it opens in WMP (and I suspect is held in memory rather than saved to disk, even interally?) I couldn't find it on my machine. And of course WMP doesn't offer any kind of save function (at least my version of it doesn't).

Palomine,

.asx files are small text based 'link' files. If you save the .asx and open it in notepad, you'll see that it actually is just a link to an http based .wmv file,
http://e7.crystal-eizou.jp/vf35_vsample.wmv

That .wmv is what you can save to disk, so in this case you can just right-click and save-as. In general, though, if you're trying to get these file types and your browser doesn't prompt you to save it to disk or open it when you paste the .wmv address into your browser, and instead just launches Media Player, you can create the following text into a file.html on your desktop, open it, and right-click save as.

FYI, if you open an asx, and it says the link is to an mms://, you won't be able to save it except with a screen capturing program.

ASX files are just text files, just open them in notepad and you can see the URL they point to. If that's a stream on a special Windows Media streaming server (mms:// protocol) you still can't do anything with it, but in this case that's not so you can download the file without any trouble.
