I didn't run - that wouldn't be seemly.
But when you're handed a note saying that Countess Bellini was waiting for you on the balcony, you did not tarry.
She was gazing out over the gardens. "You called for me, Your Excellency?"
She turned, and smiled when she saw me. "Let's drop the formalities, okay?" I nodded. "I have been told that you are a gentleman of honor and discretion."
"I do have that reputation. I do my best to live up to it...."
"Oh, stop with the false modesty. It doesn't suit you." She took a sip of her drink. "You are almost certainly aware that my marriage....things haven't been well between the Count and I. Don't say anything; you know it's true." Another sip of her drink. "I need someone I can trust; someone I can confide in. My suite is on the top floor of the north wing. Give me half an hour to bid my farewells to the party, and prepare. My lady will be expecting you." She downed the rest of her drink in one gulp, and headed back inside.
As she passed by me, she handed me the empty glass and leaned in for a whisper.
"Don't keep me waiting......"
I watched her return to the party. Her steps were a little...unsteady.
What did I just get myself into?
