Not particularly.  They only got about 12 to 14 MPG if you drove conservatively.

My '49 Ford F-1 with original L-Head engine gets a whopping 11 MPG!

Didn't matter as much to Detroit when gasoline was $0.14/gallon...

I can remember pumping gas at around that price into boats at my family's marina when I was a kid, the pumps had the handle on the side that you cranked around to re-zero the readout and dinged at every gallon pumped.  We had one pump for Regular and one for "Hi test", which I think was $0.18 - $0.19 at the time.

It really pains me to pay more than ten times that much now...
