As far as the MILF phoenomenan, I can only speak for myself (of course ) and after a brief introspection this is what I have come up with;
Gillian's character from the x-files was a very intelligent, strong and capable woman, arguably the leader/alpha between her and Mulder. Jill Taylor exhibits different qualities obviously of a more nurturing nature perhaps, but again, aruguably the alpha in her couplet with Tim. Doesn't hurt that they are both in very different ways, attractive woman, but on this level, looks are almost irrelevant. These are qualities that most males of the species find attractive for a number of reasons, some subconcious, many of wich return to our primitive roots and center upon family/tribe/reproduction. I digress. It's these qualities that many appreciate and respect which in turn makes the woman attractive to many. Personally I'm not a huge fan of Gillian, I've never faked her, but I have faked, and posted, Patricia Richardson.
As for the faking, I think that's almost diefying your ideal and creating a 21st century version of the female goddess figure. That's why for some it doesn't matter if its obvious that that's Patricia Heatons body on Chloe Vevriere's body. They are a particular ideal, both visual, but more importantly, spiritual.
But I haven't really given it much thought<@:?P
